Why USARK?

boaphile Feb 20, 2009 11:25 AM

Hello,

On January 30, 2008, US Fish and Wildlife issued a Notice of Inquiry (NOI). US Fish and Wildlife sought information regarding Boa, Python, and Eunectes genera for possible addition to the list of injurious wildlife under the Federal Lacey Act. If these species were to be added and regulated under the Lacey Act, it would become a Felony to sell or to ship a Ball Python across state lines. This is the first step in a possible rule change that would in effect shut down all aspects of the Boa, Python and Eunectes trade.

This NOI was the impetus that inspired the establishment of The United States Association of Reptile Keepers or USARK. A meeting of a number of the “who’s who” in the Reptile Industry gathered for a meeting organized by Brian Potter and Bob Ashley in Chicago. We brought together a wide range of ideas for positive and deliberate action to protect, not only the rights of Boa and Python keepers, but all Reptile keepers alike. Make no mistake, a move to limit the free exercise of our right to keep, breed, and sell Boas and Pythons is only the first step. The ultimate goal of some who are in favor of such additional regulation is to prevent the keeping of all Reptiles and Amphibians. If they are successful, your animals could be next. As such, we are all constrained to act.

The US Association of Reptile Keepers (USARK) is a science and education based advocacy for the responsible private ownership of, and trade in Reptiles. We endorse caging standards, sound husbandry, escape prevention protocols, and an integrated approach to vital conservation issues. Our goal is to facilitate cooperation between government agencies, the scientific community, and the private sector in order to produce policy proposals that will effectively address important husbandry and conservation issues. The health of these animals, public safety, and maintaining ecological integrity are our primary concerns.

USARK is a grass roots organization that seeks to enlist the many thousands of Reptile keepers all over the United States to have a part in protecting the hobby we all enjoy. USARK seeks to create a Federation of established Herpetological Societies, forums and social networking sites across the country. We all need to join hands with our mission to gain members for the purpose of giving real people a real voice and a part in protecting our hobby. USARK is already working on local legislative issues in a couple specific problem areas. USARK seeks first to help with the issues that are of a local interest to hobbyists all over the country. Our ability to provide this help is directly related to the participation and memberships of like minded people, businesses, and institutions all over our country. We need and ask for your support.

The NOI did not go unanswered, as many responded using the Federal Register to answer the information that US Fish and Wildlife requested. But the work is not complete. We must all lock elbows with the goal of protected what we have all taken for granted, before the NOI was issued. USARK is committed to the accurate communication of scientific information to the US Fish and Wildlife Service. After all, the science is clearly on our side, but science alone will not assure the preservation of our right to keep and breed Reptiles. The most important next step is for USARK to get the word out to the thousands of folks that care about this issue.

Make no mistake, the assault on Pythons and Boas is only the beginning. The groups who are in favor of the legislation that threatens the Python and Boa trade are opposed to keeping any Reptiles whatsoever as pets. They seek to incrementally dismantle the hobby. If they are successful, the Pythons and Boas will fall first. Then they will go after the keepers of Bearded Dragons, Leopard Geckos and colubrids of all kinds. In fact a bill working its way through the US House of Representatives, called HR 669, seeks to outlaw the trade in all non-native species except farm animals, cats, dogs and Gold Fish. That takes most everything out of everyone’s hands. This is a very real threat and one that if you do not help protect your freedom to keep these critters, you may very well loose that right. Take this very seriously as we are. However, there is hope.

This is where you can be of great assistance. First you can join USARK. There is strength in numbers and right now what we need to do is build this grass roots base of folks that take the Herp Hobby seriously who are willing to write a letter, or make a phone call to preserve our freedom to engage in our chosen enterprises. So please join. This will enable you to get notification the moment we have any news of any type to let you know about. We are all concerned about our futures and what better way to direct your future than to take a direct hand in steering it?
USARK - Join Us

Next we have created a number of banners that can be placed on web sites of all kinds. For anyone who chooses to become a member and support USARK, we have a set of banners that you can proudly display on your website, forum signature or anywhere you choose. This so everyone can see that you too are an active supporter of our right to continue our respective Reptile hobbies. Feel free to resize any of these images as you wish. We have also written the code for you, which is necessary to post those banners that link to the USARK.org web site.

Patty, Bruce, and myself are PROUD MEMBERS of USARK and there is a link on my website as well. I'm in touch with Andrew Wyatt almost daily on issues relating to this bill. The upcoming documentary on invasive herps of Florida funded by PBS with Nigel Marven as it's host will begin filming shortly. Myself and Shawn Hefick will be involved with this project from beginning to end. It is our hope that the REAL FACTS about the Python invasion will then be accurately depicted as they really are instead of widespread false news reports based on histeria and speculation. Watch for it as the understanding I have is that it will be aired this September. USARK DESPERATELY NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT NOW. Please join us in this fight to save our hobby and careers. Make no mistake this Bill is NOT another false alarm but is the most serious threat I've seen in a lifetime in the Herp Industry. Join USARK now....

Tom! A documentary like that is exactly what we need right now-hopefully it does not air too late to be of help in this current crisis.

What we really need is to figure out a way forward with some kind of comprehensive approach legislatively, so we can avoid having to fight this war on so many fronts in future....

Hi Brad, Shawn Heflick [the co-chair of the Scientific Board of USARK] and I approached Nigel about a year ago regarding this project. For the last year he and I have been researching all available info on Burmese Pythons living here in Florida. This has included field work on our own plus many other folks as well. Additionally we have spoken to many people involved in this proffesionally and we have aquired a lot of knowledge they have kindly shared with us. It is our hope to reveal the actual facts regarding this situation. Nigel is an excellent choice for this task as he is a herper himself as well as concerned as we are about what effect these Pythons and other exotics can have over time on the ecology of the Everglades. In any event our research to date has been interesting and we hope to share it not only with fellow herpers but the general public as well. USARK through Shawn Heflick has taken a leadership role along with myself and it's finally coming to fruition..thanks

Brad,

So, now, I assume this means you and HCU support the right of folks to buy and sell wild caught python species? Please advise

Welkerii

brhaco Feb 21, 2009 06:38 PM

Well, Mike, since HCU is a state organization, the intricacies of the international trade in pythons have not and likely will not be coming up ....

As for myself, whatever the answer is to the problem of invasive species, the current legislation in House and Senate is definitely NOT that answer. personally though, I think the best we can hope for in the long run is a situation similar to that under which the exotic bird folks have been operating (quite successfully, I might add!) for a decade and a half.....just my own opinion.

Since this law also will also potentially restrict captive breeding, sales, ownership and transport of captive bred exotics, I would expect many memebers of HCU to fight it on some level.

Thanks for your hard work, Tom! (And thanks to everyone else involved.) I've been reluctant to join any group, since up until this post I just didn't see any indication that there was an effective strategy to fight the ridiculous legislation. This is more of a PR issue than a scientific issue. The intentions behind writing letters to politicians and filling out surveys are good, but that's not effective unless also accompanied by playing hardball. A documentary is a great start. I'd like to see more, but I'm pretty much a nobody. I've e-mailed several TV shows (O'Reilly, Glenn Beck show, etc.), but no response so far. It might sound crazy, but I think someone should even bring some large snakes onto some daytime show like Oprah and explain the truth about pythons and what's going on. The "sit back and wait" approach is something I don't agree with, since every time one of those one-sided, BS shows comes on TV saying how killer pythons are taking over the country and is not quickly rebutted, it's another nail in our coffin.

Anyway, just my 2 cents, and again, thanks!

Thanks,
Ed

Tom,

Sincere thanks for the work on this project. After watching at least three "infomercials" on TV, it's good to see another prespective. I remember that one of these "infomercials" was in response to that python photo that had consumed an alligator and later perished...I received a copy of that photo via the internet...

I believe these shows were titled "Giant Snakes" (or something like that)...At the end of the show, there was a creeping map of the invasion up from Florida...In other words, Giant snakes coming to a neighborhood near you...

Hollywood hasn't been beneficial either with that venomous snakes loose in an aircraft movie and the Anaconda movies...Computer animation is a wonderful thing...

I'll look for the show and thanks again.

Later,
Jim.

All,

I also encourage folks to support USARK and PIJAC. Andrew Wyatt, Marshall Meyers and Bill Brant have assured me that both of these groups support the right of American citizens to buy and sell legally collected wild caught herps. They suppoprt the commercial end of the industry fully and understand that access to wild caught animals is the foundation of the industry to which we have, and can continue to, build our captive collections and provide wild caught animals to hobbyists, researchers and educators.

Should we really be providing animals to the researchers, zoos and educators who are trying to shut this hobby down?

Jaykis Feb 26, 2009 09:59 AM

"Should we really be providing animals to the researchers, zoos and educators who are trying to shut this hobby down?"

Maybe it's me, but I know of no educators or zoos trying to shut us down. And few, if any, real researchers. Can you give a couple examples?
