Inyo Co. Great Basin Gopher

sjohn Feb 21, 2009 08:42 AM

I think it was Bart Bruno who not to long ago mentioned how underrated Great Basins are. They are modestly sized, have great temperaments and come in a wonderful array of colors....especially some of the populations in CA. This a young individual from Inyo Co. This guy should develop some nice yellows.

I agree. Very underrated. That is a great looking snake. Some of the CA ones are stunning animals. Possibly the prettiest Pits inthe state. Here's one of the 2 I found out on the desert fringes of L.A. Co. I think Byron's got some from the same locale.

This guy was found in March 2007. He's started out growing really fast then slowed down on feeding (should have put him down in the winter). He's just about 4 feet now and didn't turn out to be a great looker but is an awesome pet. Super inquisitive and absolutely tame...doesn't flinch at anything.

Day after cruised.

I think he looks pretty good. I like them all.

Hey, Monklet, where'd you cruise that GB? They do seem to go off feed in the winter unlike the annectens. Your snake seems to have colored up very similar to the ones we find out in the L.A. Co. deserts. I cruised this one Father's Day 2006.

Jason, is this snake typical of the GB's in Phelan? I found it on the map and thought iyt might be worth a herping trip if the GBs are smokin' like that.

reako45

Jason Nelson Feb 22, 2009 05:01 PM

I have never been herping CA.

I dont think all GBs from Phelane look like that.

I got mine from a good friend. If I remember right, he told the mother was WC while gravid. She was normal looking and she was released after she laid 10 eggs. Half hatch normal and the other half Blondes?

I hope they breed this year, so I can see what they look like!

Thanks Jason

Here's an adult that was stretched out alongside a trial in the park last Summer.
Dozens of people walked right by it and didn't notice.
I managed to get a few photos before the snake continued on its way.

HI Tim

Wow big and healthy. Very nice classic GB.

Zions is an amazing place huh. One of my favorite places in UT

Here's a female that I found while roadhunting. She was a yearling at the time of collection. Now, a couple years later, she's beginning to develop an orange tint. I agree with you that the manageable size and easy disposition of these snakes makes for great pet keeping potential.

Great looking critter.

It seems like GBs get cleaner looking the more south you go. I know the northern GBs, like in Idaho are real speckled looking.

sjohn Feb 22, 2009 10:18 AM

...talking about. The tremendous variety of these guys. Thanks Jason for the pics those are some outstanding animals. I really like the ones seen in the western part of San Bernadino Co. and eastern LA Co. which is where I believe Bryons are from. Alot of these have a clean yellowish gound color with reddish blotches in the middle contrasted with dark black blotching on the anterior.

reako45 Feb 22, 2009 01:50 PM

Yeah, Jason's Utah locales ROCK! I'll never forget the first time I saw one in the wild after only seeing pics of them. We cruised it on Dillon Rd. This is one (possibly even an intergrade) from the North East part of L.A. Co. Forgive the bad pic.

They should have been called Variable Gophers!!! instead. I have seen a big varity of colors and patterns in the same areas.

reako45 Feb 22, 2009 11:00 PM

...definitely fits. I've found GBs w/ completely different coloration as close as 15 miles away from each other.
