Bioactive Substrates

mbm95 Feb 21, 2009 11:13 PM

I stumbled across something about these last night.. Supposedly, you only have to do a complete cage cleaning every 6 months or so. I'm not sure if you have to use live plants or not in it. I would be too afraid to try it anyway due to all the bacteria, harmful or not. So do any of ya'll have any experience with it?

I believe you posted on the Morelia forum. I know of one American Morelia breeder who uses bioactive substrate but for whatever reason does not discuss it publicly. He has gone years without completely breaking down his cages. I won't speak for him beyond that, however.

If you're interested I would at least start with De Vosjoli's book "The Art of Keeping Snakes". Maybe buy a cheap Crested Gecko or a smaller arboreal snake and give it a try.

I found it on another Morelia forum that I am not a member of. Not really interested, just curious about it. It seems like too much trouble to set up if you ask me. But, I could be wrong. I don't know much about it really at all.

Chris and I have discussed this to great lengths. I'm planning on giving it a try pretty soon with some small arboreal snakes and will definitely keep track. Like you said it's ALOT more work to set up but the long term satisfaction would be worth it IMO.

I too would be interested in anyone's experiences with this kind of setup.

I have used them. They work awesome. You have to have just the right amount of ventilation. That is the only tough part.
