Great Basins, etc.

BBBruno Feb 23, 2009 10:12 PM

Recently there were a few posts regarding Great Basin Gophers, and it is nice to see that they are more appreciated now than ever before. For those of you who entered the hobby recently, there was a time when keeping any Gophers other than albinos was looked down upon;in the '80's I was made fun of for keeping (ugh!) Gophers, and wanting to obtain (GASP!)Bullsnakes from every state, province, and estada im which they were known to occur. In those days, if you didn't have the "flavor of the month" tri-color King, you were viewed as a something of an oddity, to be polite (for the record, I like tricolor Kings, but not to keep,I'd rather keep tricolor Bulls). Times have clearly changed, and very much for the better, as evidenced by recent posts. I did mention sometime back that Great Basins are particularly underrated, especially since they have the Pituophis trait of being highly variable throughout their large range. One aspect of a recent post concerned me, however; while I'm sure it was well intentioned this post gave precise locality data. This is not a good thing to do; there are few if any people frequenting this forum that are less than above board, but you never know who is reading these posts who lack the ethics that most of us possess. County and state are more than sufficient; beyond that is inviting the unscrupulous. Be careful when you post, anybody can read it, and not just the good folks.

Yes, good advice. It's a great hobby w/ great snakes & for the most part people too. Hopefully being careful about exact locale data will keep it that way. Always nice to hear from another Pit (Great Basin afficionado).

Hi Bart

I hear what your saying about anyone can read these forums. And I think your dead on and bring up great points too. We should protect the animals we love.

Some of these locality animals were not collected and some were. Alot of these animals took years to pair up. I was very selective and some were super hard to find. Other where more of fluke finding. I think most people be very dissapointed if they travel long distances to get to some of these localitys.

I glad to see and hear more people getting into GBs

Good post Bart, and I always enjoy communicating with you and reading your posts, like you I am more of a fan of locality animals, and hopefully, your Albertas will be able to produce a female for my male this year! Hope you are doing well!

I have made similar points on other forums. It can be like telling someone about a good fishing spot.... with snakes the last thing you wanna come across is your favorite spots torn apart and cleaned out. Tom Stevens

"County and state are more than sufficient", for you and perhaps for many others. I enjoy locality animals myself and have personally observed a large amount of variation within a county. Brewster County, Texas alone is actually larger than a couple of states. Hence, it is not sufficient 'for me' to just know that my GBK is a Brewster County animal. I need a little more precision than that.

Since you seem to know a bit about Brewster county, you would also know of the breeders that deal in these locality specific animals, and could therefore purchase any c.b.b. animals from them, or hunt for them yourself, but to put locality data out on the net allows the unscrupulous to do what they will to your "locality". Let them do their own homework and work as hard as some have for their prizes. No sense in giving away what someone should work for.

Fine and good, but not online where everyone can see. That's the point of the post (did you miss it?) I know exactly where all my animals are from, but county and state are all you get from me unless you're a close friend or colleague, which is as it should be.
