HE FINALLY ATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

bigbearhook Feb 24, 2009 10:46 AM

I'm so excited!!!!! My adult male BP has been off feed for over 3 months. When I got him a year ago, he was emaciated and it took a long time to get him back up to healthy weight. Then back in november, he went off food. He hasn't touch anything and has lost some weight. I've been getting stressed about it but knew it was common for BPs. Then last night I offered him one of my ASF juvies. HE TOOK IT!!! And then another!!! And then another!!! And then another!!! AND THEN ANOTHER!!! 5 IN ALL!!!!! YEAH FOR HIM!!!!

Congratulations but good luck trying to get him OFF of ASF now that he's started so I hope you have a good supply of them! lol
The hunger strike is nothing to worry about and is VERY common. Try having a female go off feed for 8 1/2 months and try not to get stressed about it. She even shed 3 times so obviously she was growing.

Basically my answer to "it hasn't eaten in 2 months!" is "welcome to balls!"

3 months and I do have plenty ASF. I have 4 1.3 breeding colonies and are producing 100 a month. I don't have to ever worry about that.

You shouldn't be worry if a male goes off feed during mating season.
But I would not give him 5 in a row, try to start slow.

I worried because like I stated, when I got him, he was almost dead. I put a lot of effort in him and I didn't like seeing him loose the weight. I know he probably will do this every year at this time. But I'm still excited he ate. Oh and the 5 ASF he ate were no bigger than a small mouse.

I share your excitement. My male went off food for almost four months until one day last week he showed a feeding response to when my husband reached in to take his water bowl (he pulled his hand out super quick after seeing that classic S-shaped neck). We grabbed a mouse as fast as we could and he struck it before we could even drop it in the cage. Between now and then he has eaten three more mice and is working on a shed.
