QUESTION ABOUT BUGS

HerpDaddy May 24, 2003 02:17 PM

Here's a question for anyone who has wood in their terrarium or snake set up...

We purchased a really nice, large piece of wood at the
reptile show in Tampa a few months ago.
I think it is grape wood or manzanita not sure.

When we got it home we placed it in an empty tank we were setting up for a boa, and soon noticed tiny piles of sawdust under the wood.

I believe this wood houses a colony of powder post beetles, as we can see them moving now and then. Very small beetles, about 1/8 inch long. We have tried everything to kill these critters, including soaking the wood in a barrel of water for 2 weeks (with bleach) and sealing the wood in plastic garbage bags with a small amount of house hold bug spray for several days.
But they're baaaacckk!!!!
We have now removed it from the display.
I don't want these things to get into the walls of our home. Before we dispose of this beautiful piece of wood, any ideas?

If it will fit in your oven, you can cook em. Be careful not to heat the wood too hot.
