Hey everyone my name is Rachael and I have a columbian girl that is TRYING to have babies as we speak...earlier this afternoon I came into the snake room and I looked in her cage to see that she was trying to have her babies...she is 5 days past her due date and I am REALLY worried about her...she's been pushing for hours now and not making any progress. Is this normal? What should I do? Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated Thanks!

Rachel,
All this is just my opinion, and I am not much of a worrier so I may not help much with you question, but since no one else has replied here are my two cents....

You will notice that the mom gets restless before labor kicks in, you say she has matter hancing out of her vent? What does it look like?

Maybe a couple of things to try: make sure she has some type of material to make a "nest" like newsprint or bedding.

Try misting the cages ceiling and sides lightly mist the substrate to raise humidity.

Avoid bothering her and just check periodically, in my experience with BCI most of my births were in the evening hours.

These are all just opinions, I personally would give it a day or two before you get too concerned, however if she is looking like she is stressing a trip to a qualified vet will be needed.

Hope this helps keep us posted.

First, if you're 100% sure she was in labor and trying to give birth.... take her to a Herp Vet ASAP.

If you're not 100% sure.... Then you can wait a day or so.

Boas, prior to giving birth, will pass what ever is left in their digest system. There's a lot of movment and arching in this process. Boas actually work harder to pass urates and poo than they do to give birth.

So.... what does this "tissue" look like that's hanging out of her? Is it pink? Does it look like waste matter or does it look like "part of her?" If it looks like it's part of her.... TAKE HER TO THE VET NOW! If it's part of her, it could be a prolapse and she needs vet care ASAP.
If it looks like waste matter, then clean it off or leave her alone.

Can you take any pictures of this tissue? BTW there's no "tissue" involved in the birthing process.

How did you figure when her due date is?
Is this her first litter?

Well, the tissue is pink and kind of lumpy we moved about a week ago and I can't find my camera at the moment, she was passing clear fluids when pushing. I had bought her in September and I was told that she was a virgin. Her POS was on Oct 19 that's where I got her due date. She doesn't seem to be stressed right now, she's coiled up in the corner of the cage.Near her vent it is swollen...I'm thinking a vet visit is coming. Thanks to all who replied -Rachael

Pink and lumpy sounds like it's part of her. She needs to see a vet ASAP.

As for the due date.... Maybe I figure my due dates differently, but from that POS date, she should have been due on Feb 1st. When I figure a due date for my females I count 18 weeks from the ovulation or 15 weeks from the POS.

So, I counted 15 weeks from your boas POS date and came up with Feb 1st.

Being that far past due and having tissue hanging out from her means she needs a vet "NOW"!

Hopefully she'll be alright. Please come back and update on how's she's doing.
