Flooring for a Showcase Cage?

scrapulous Feb 24, 2009 05:16 PM

Hello,

I have a Showcase Cage. The floor has a slightly raised area on one side to put a heat pad under, so tile won't lie flat. If you have a Showcase Cage, what type of flooring do you use?

Do I really need to get flooring? In my glass tank I've always used paper towels because the glass bottom was slippery for him. The floor of the Showcase Cage is smooth, but not slippery like glass.

Thanks.

I guess I'm the only one with a Showcase Cage?

Papertowel is fine as a substrate. You don't need to use tile if you don't want to, that is just one of the main options for a safe substrate.

I have 2 48x24x18 Showcase cages, and both are in "nice" areas of our home. We keep two males in one, and two females in the other.I just didn't want newspaper or shelf paper because I didn't like the way it looked. I have used: (1) screened play sand, and this looks very natural. However one of my dragons in eachcage is a "digger", and everyday gets sand and pebbles in the tracks of the front slider doors. I have to vacum the tracks daily in the two separate rooms, and this gets old very fast. I have asked the Showcase cage company if they could make a deeper front "rim", but don't think that is going to happen soon. (2) Two strips of repti-carpet (the smooth felt type) placed lengthways and overlapping. You have to have enough of these to change them out several times a week, as "poop spots" remain, even if you are fastidious about wiping up the poop. You just wash the soiled ones (although my wife insists they be washed separately and not with any other regular clothes!)and rotate them accordingly. (3) cut to fit pieces of vinyl flooring. These look good if in a natural pattern. Anything you have to cut to fit in the cages generally will have a small "gap" somewhere, and crickets will find these and crawl down in them. Since we are gone most of the day, the screened sand is the best for not getting additional poop on the beardie feet and undersides. Anything smooth and you have a gooey pile of poop that the dragons will walk through, etc. Nothing is perfect.
