!! BD Leaped Into Heat Lamp Burned?!!

JeffreyPeacock Feb 24, 2009 08:10 PM

I was on my computer when I heard a weird clank so I turned around to face my beard's cage and she had her head and her upper body in the head lamp! She has grown a lot recently and I am a fool not to have moved her heat lamp slightly up so she couldnt jump to it, but she leaped about a good 8-10inches and did a "pull up" into the fixture. I immediately freaked and ran to the head fixture and shook her off of it. THe first shook got her to dangle on the light fixture with one claw and the second shake of the lamp made her fall off. Now the lamp is extremely hot it has a 100Watt bulb and is metalic, I can maybe press my hand on the inside of it for about a second before it starts hurting.

Here are pics of the markings on the one claw that she was "dangling" from after the first shake. I've seen similar markings on lizards before but I was told they are actually "bruises" and not burn marks. What is your take on it? What should I do? She is as active as normal and running around the cage. She is about 9 months old and about 13 inches total length. Also when should I provide a burrying site for her in case she produces infertile eggs?

1st Photo shows the two front claws, one with no markings and the other that was burnt/bruised that she was dangling off of after trying to shake her off the lamp.

Sorry got my photos confused, first photo in first post is the burnt/bruised hand with her other front claw that appears normal. The second photo is just of the burnt/bruised claw.

Also here is similar marking on my old chameleon that turned out to be a bruise, looks similar.

I think your main goal is to deal with the burn marks. Not sure what to do but a vet visit if she is having problems. Im sure someone will be able to give you more adive on what to do. Sorry for your luck though

Thanks, atleast I was there to catch it! I hope she hasn't done this when im not around =T. I dont want to go to a vet if its not necessary, so far she seems to her claw very well and is active. Right after the incident I should note she did this weird arm waving thing (not the normal arm wave had a few studders in it as if something was wrong) with her claw as if it was really hurt and I was reallllyyy worried. After about 10 seconds she put it back down and ran around the cage as normal jumping on her rock and turning her head towards me.

the abnormal wave'n was her give'n you the 'BIRD' for shake'n her off the lamp. you might have caused that hand boo-boo?
I notice w/ the animals i choose to work with that in times of HIGH stress it's best if i can keep a cool head & help out with out a flip out- hope that makes sence, not being rude, once I had a bungi cord attached to a crate for extra strengh(?)well the young dog thought it was a toy, & hooked though her mouth, up through her cheek & visable in her eyelid, almost rip'n out the ball (talk about flip'n out), but I'm a good ol boy who's done tons of fish'n & took a deep breath & fished it out, bloodiest dang mess, my friend puked, I called it a day & went home......the dog is fine her she is today.....

i could have said your right you might want to move your lamp, I like to story version

For now I suggest keeping her cage spotlessly clean to prevent any chance of infection. Burns are notorious for letting in infections especially second or third degree burns..I can't tell from the picture how bad the burn is.

IF you have a particulate substrate, I would remove and use just paper towels...change every day... If the foot swells up, she starts favoring it, or the burn looks worse, then take her to a vet. If infection sets in too much, she could end up loosing the toes, or worse.
