Eye scale problem

snakeadventures Feb 25, 2009 05:53 PM

One of my corns shed and a small portion of the right eye scale remained. I soaked him in water and gently tried to remove the remnant with my finger, but it wouldn't come off. I have never had to deal with this, but I am sure there are a lot of people who have. Any info would be greatly appreciated. (might this come off with the next shed?)

Either put him in a container with damp paper towels or put him in a damp cloth bag (like a pillowcase).
After a few hours the snake work work off the unshed piece on its own accord.

Thanks. Hopefully that will work.

Are you SURE that it absolutely still has the spectacle?

If it does there should be a white rim around the edge of the eye which you may be able to grab with a tweezer. A tiny bit of scotch tape could do it to.

Soaking or putting them in a tub of wet moss might do it, or it will make the above things easier.

Please keep in mind that if you try to move a spectacle that isn't there you can do a lot of harm to your snakes eye. If you aren't sure just leave it. One extra scale won't hurt them until the next shed when it will likely come off. If its still on at that point I would let a vet take them off.

Sometimes, more than the scale itself rips off- it takes off part of the layer beneath.
When that happens, if appears that there is still some scale remaining.
Messing with THAT can cause really BIG problems.

After trying to moisten and remove what appears to be remnant of the old eye scale several times w/o any success, I think I will wait until the next shed to see what happens. When I say remnant, I mean that its not the whole eye scale, but just something near the center with rough edges. When the eye is wet, the remnant cannot be seen. The snake can see out of the eye, at least well enough to see my hand approaching from that side. Thanks for all the advice. I am hoping that the next shed will remove this. I have never used "shed-ease" on this snake, but I think I will try some this time.
Thanks,
Robby

I'm currently having the same problem with my rosy. Any luck?

My corn snake is currently discolored and will shed in a few days. I have soaked him twice in warm water mixed with "shed ease" and I am hoping that the remnants from the previous shed on his right eye scale will simply come off with this shed. I have never had to use a product to assist in shedding, but if this helps with the eye scale then I'm a believer. I will let you know when he sluffs.
