Scale rot?

BCRHerps Feb 25, 2009 08:23 PM

I'll post some pictures when I can but for know you'll have to deal with description...

Anyway, I was checking out my dragon today and she has a bunch of old crusty discolored scales on her tail, belly and a few on her legs are these just scales that never shed or is it rotting?

Not really a good picture in my head from what you gave. Is it a certain color?

Try giving her a good soak (1-2 hours). My guess would be your problem is taking place due to stuck sheds, especially if you are saying they are dispersed throughout the dragons body and not in one location. If this is the problem a couple soaks should take care of the crusty discolored scales. Giving baths on a regular basis are great for dealing with bad sheds and keeping hydration levels up. Thanks.

Looks like a few abnormal scales, femoral pores and dirty underbelly.

I suggest soaking him for about 20 minutes in luke warm water (around 80F) and with an old soft toothbrush and very mild soap (like ivory..definitely unscented) (basically just run the brush over a bar of soap once or twice) and gently scrub the dirty areas. After he's been soaking for 20 minutes any dirt or dried skin should come off easily with gentle circular motions with the toothbrush.

Scale rot is almost always caused by a wet dirty environment more than the typical dry environment in a dragon's cage. Fungus can also cause similar marks but I don't think that is what is here in your case.

Definitely try the bath and gentle scrubbing, rinse and look again. It isn't unusual for dragons to get dirty if they run through their poop before you can spot clean.

It will also be a good time to clean up the cage too, if it hasn't been done recently.

I just cleaned the cage and put new Tile flooring in and the only watery thing in her cage is her water bowl so I suppose it's poop

Well thanks I'll be sure to try that
