Group photo comparing shell developement

boxienuts Feb 26, 2009 10:07 PM

Things are a bit slow now. Just pulled out my easterns last week to give them a check and a good cold water soak just to make they weren't getting dehydrated, they all looked great, so took a quick group photo, then put them back and they immediatedly burrowed back down for their last 2 months of their nap. Normally I don't disturb them, and I let the 3-toeds alone, but unfortunately the soil was really moist from the easterns enclosure when I put them down, wetter than I would like, and so as a result I haven't been watering them, so just wanted to check for rot and make sure they had a drink.
Anyway I was looking at the photo and then I compared it to one taken last spring when they emerged from brumation, and you can see that their shell patterns have developed and the background is getting darker, this spring hopefully they will be old enough and developed enough to breed. The one male that is on the right side of this years photo (bottom photo) there is definately something odd about him, his shell has remained light, his skin is pinkish not really gray at all and while his eyes aren't albino pink they are very light and pinkish with red pupils of course, not saying he is a morph or anything but he's definately is different looking than most. Will have to post close up shots of him this spring.

Jeff-
Nice photos of nice EBTS!!! How old are they?? Did you raise them from egg?
I really like that light-colored male too. I assume he is not a sibling to the others. do you know the gender of all of them? Sorry for all the questions, just curious.
I have two females (one very old) that I got as adults, and one male raised from an egg. I was pretty sure he was a male by age 4 and really colored up and began showing all the male characteristics throughout last summer (He was 5 in October). I also have two 1.5 year-olds from a roadkilled female that are inside. These two are very dark, as was mom.
I can't wait to see the 3 adults, which are outside. They have hibernated fine each year, but I always worry about them!!

Thanks for the kind words, I appreciate that. For some reason I was thinking they will be 5yrs old, but since you asked I went back and took a close look at my records, and they are actually 4 yr olds, so maybe they will actually have another yr or 2 till they breed, although there weights are near that of my 3 toeds and they haven't grown much in the last couple years. I bought them as CBB and captive raised 2yr olds, so no, I did not raise them up from egg like I have 2 of my 3 toeds. I got the 3 toeds in 2001 so they will be 8yrs old this summer, wow time flies. I believe that I have 2.3 with the easterns, the light colored male on the right in the bottom picture and then the one on the far left also had bright red eyes the last year, plus the 2 two males have longer thicker tails, and less domed shells than the other 3.
Posts some pics of your boxies when they come up if you don't mind, or post pics from last summer now

Here is a photo of the 3 outside last summer. The darker female in back looks very old, the shell is smooth. She has never laid eggs in the 5 years that I have had her. The other female is front left, and the male I raised from egg is in the front right.

Very nice looking trio you have there. Theres an extra special sence of pride and a relationship built when you raise up a boxie or any reptile for that matter from baby or hatchling isn't there?

There certainly is. These two little guys are 1.5 years now, from this female who was killed on the highway. I took out 5 eggs and ended up with these two. If one ends up female I will probably keep it.
