NEWBIE....sorta

zippy00_99 Feb 27, 2009 12:08 PM

I have been keeping ball pythons for about 3 years now and have 7 of them. I went to my girlfriends, friends house and found a long boa in a tank with no heat, no water, the room temp was set at 65 and it was by a window, in northern illinois, in february...I asked about it, and she said that her boyfriend wanted to get rid of it, but wanted it to go to someone who knew what they were doing.....I was shocked. I waited until her boyfriend got home and asked him if I could have it, and he said yes without hesitation. It's a girl, she is 3 years old and is the size of an adult ball python. The guy said that he only fed her once a week, so that she wouldn't get big. Again, I was shocked! I gave her some water before he got home, and when I got her to MY house, she threw up all the water that she drank because she was so thirsty. She looks to be doing fine this morning, but she is my FIRST boa. Is husbandry any different from a ball python??? ANY INFO WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!! Thanks in advance.

Feeding a 3yr old every 10-14 days is plenty. She may have thrown-up the water due to the car ride. .

Often Boas will spit up water if handled after drinking. Especially if she drank alot because of thirst, she'll be fine in that area.
She may have been fed once a week.
My question is this, what size food item ?
The problem here is if he was feeding her an adult mouse once a week.
This is far too small of a meal for any Boa older than 8 months in my opinion.
She is three years old she should be 4 to 6 feet in length probably.
If it were me I would give small rat(not mouse)every 7-10 days for about three weeks.
Then graduate her to a medium rat every 10 days.
Providing the medium Rat is about the same size as the biggest part of her body or just slightly larger once in awhile.
After a few more weeks you could graduate her to an every two weeks feeding schedule.

I'll leave a Link below for a Boa care Guide if you would like to read it.
Alot of great there

She was fed a medium rat once a MONTH! I will feed her a small rat once a week for 4 weeks, and then a medium rat once a week for 4 weeks, and then a large rat every two weeks. Does this sound good? She ate on friday....DAMN she was hungry..lol. And she is LOVING her new warmth. Her old shed is also making its' way off of her via the nice humidity she now has. I am glad for her. Any other tips/comments/complaints I will be glad to receive. Thanks.
