My first Carpet Python (pics)

Lyn Sep 11, 2003 07:56 AM

Hello everybody, this is my first post on this board. I've been reading your posts and admiring the photos of your snakes for several weeks as I've been on the lookout for a Carpet Python to call my own. I was planning on getting a Jungle, but happened upon a really sweet adult male cross for sale who just stole my heart. He is a Coastal/Jungle cross, approx 5 years old and 7 feet long. He has a wonderful temperment and I am just thrilled with him. His previous owner had him on fresh killed rats, but he took a f/t with no problems at all. I have many years of reptile experience but this is my first large snake (have had mostly Kings, Corns, Rats, Milks, BPs, etc...) Although I had my heart set on a high contrast black/yellow jungle, I've come to really admire this guys natural coloration and I think he is beautiful in his own way. I've nicknamed him Bear (he gives great Bear Hugs). Here are some pics...

Here he is in his new home...

In his hollow log...

Here is all of him. He is getting ready to shed, but the previous owner said this is pretty much his normal coloration...

Hope you liked the pics. I look forward to getting to know all of you and sharing more pics of Bear if you'd like to see them.

Congrats on your new carpet...

That's an interesting looking enclosure. What's it made from? Dimensions?

Thank you. It is meant as a temporary enclosure until I can order him a larger custom one. It is a 130 gallon tempered glass reptile enclosure, 3 feet high, 3 feet long, 2 feet deep. He has Aspen bedding, a cat litter pan to soak in, a hollow cork log, and two hanging logs. It has a sliding screen top, but it was a bit flimsy for a large snake, so I've reinforced it with peg board, hardware cloth, and cargo straps (you can see one of the straps in the pic, it's the red strip going down the side). It has a large door on the side which I use to access the enclosure instead of using the sliding top. I have more photos on my digital camera but my computer is in the shop so I only have limited access to other peoples computers to try to do photos for now. He seems to like his new home, especially the cork log. I was amazed he could fit his whole body into it.
