Shed question

jasonw Feb 28, 2009 01:05 PM

Hi. I have 2 Leopard Geckos. One male and one female that are house separately but the enclosures are right next to each other. For some od reason this last shed for both of them was a bad one. I never understood bad sheds because I have never really had one I would call bad but I guess there is a first for everything. Anyway extra misting and gentle rubbing was not doing the trick so today I got Zoomeds Repti Shedding Aid. The directions say to spray it on, rub it in and your done. Should I also try to remove the skin or just like it said. The female is having a very hard time getting the skin off her tail and legs and the male is having a hard time with his head and legs. Any other input?

First of all, how long has their shed been taking?

Second of all, I don't have any experience with a shed-aid, but I would assume that they wouldn't leave a step out of the instructions on one, so I'd say go ahead and stick to what they recommend.

I'd recommend keeping up with the misting and just give it time, I think your Leos will be just fine.

Thus far they have both had this shed problem for over a week. Normally shedding takes them maybe a day and all the old skin is consumed. I misted for a week then got this shed aid. I started worrying when the lack of proper shed started appearing to give them great discomfort.

Do your leos have humid hides?

I've never used that product either. If it doesnt work, try soaking in a tupperware container with the lid on it (with small holes for ventilation) this way the humidity inside the container will build up and help soften the over all skin.

You can then carefully peel or gently rub off the skin.

Good luck!

The do have humid hides as well as get misted. I have what I like to call a "shed chamber" its like 200% humidity all the time and when my snakes have problems I put them in there for about 30 minutes and the skin just melts off with no ill effects. I tried this with the leos and it didn't work.

For the tail and legs, use 3% hydrogen peroxide dapped on a Q-tip.

Be wary about using it around they eyes, as it will cause irritation.
