'07 Val Verde female

dystopian Feb 28, 2009 06:39 PM

She's an '07, descended from Chris Baubel's line that produced the first leucistics.

Wonderful temperament, wonderful animal.

Curious to hear thoughts/opinions as to what might be going on with her genetically, as the orange coloration in her banding has gradually diminished with each subsequent shed.

I couldn't get a decent belly shot (wouldn't hold still), though her 'flecking' is a very light caramel color.

Note that this image was taken in natural light and was not altered (filtered, adjusted) in any way. Too, her most recent shed was just over one week prior, so her colors are quite true to their 'normal' appearence.

In short, what you see is what you get.

A slightly different angle, and larger format.

Again, taken in natural light, no editing whatsoever.

If I remember corectly the way that it was explained to me by Chris a couple of years back is that he has been back breeding a group of animals for several years to produce alterna with greatly reduced black banding... Much like his outstanding line of "Baubles" Pyro's. But, Chris is finding that along with reduced black for some reason the red pigmentation is also begining to wash out, like you are seeing here with your animal. But, I also thought that this group was generic and not any particular local, so i could be off base a bit with my description??

Either way that is a very nice/different looking animal you have there. Good Luck with him!

Thanks Mike for the kind words.

Chris explained to me that this animal's parents hailed from Val Verde Co. stock, though could be traced to no specific locality.

He went on to say that in his mind this was as much to say that they are, in fact, generics.

I have a sibling male as well. Can't wait 'til next season...

I think your Alterna is one of the neatest I have ever viewed. I love the fade outs that fade into gray, not a lighter orange or the aztec look. I dont know how that is accomplished but I would love to hear if anyone has witnessed such an alterna that was observed in the wild.

Congrats... You have a very cool alterna.

Best Wishes,

Trevor,
That could be a "marker" for the lucy gene also? who knows for sure.
