that's a wicked cool snake!!!!!

jdt Feb 28, 2009 10:38 PM

That's a Parietalis??? I never would of guessed. What would you call that pattern, piebald?

boxienuts Mar 01, 2009 09:34 AM

That is definately a unique looking snake. Hard to really tell from the photos but it almost looks scaleless and/or piebald and/or a form of motley/striped, which would be a really rare and remarkable matation, far removed from the wild type? Would be nice to hear some history on this snake, like was in found that way, where was it found, or did you produce it in captivity, was is born that way, ect. because from the photo alone, it's hard to even identify that snake as a red-sided garter snake (not saying it's not), because it is so far removed visually from wild type, again it's just hard to even identify that snake as a red-sided in the photo, and maybe it's just due to photo, maybe in person it is clearly identifiably a red-sided, or maybe you saw it born from a red-sided, ect, so it would be nice to hear more about this very, very interesting snake indeed.

Has Scott contacted you?I'm sure he wants that one.White sided is a form of lucy.I like how it still has the vetebral stripe.Awesome snake!

boxienuts Mar 02, 2009 07:35 AM

I can see were you guys are coming from calling it "white sided"/ or leucistic, but even for a "white sided" it has some major extra pattern change blochy/striping going on. I think it would be very interesting to see what the iris and pupil colors are, from the pic it looks maybe black?

That is a cool snake, what is the history on it ?

Scott

ssssnakeluver Mar 01, 2009 07:37 PM

I emailed him...he said it was one of 4 babies from a red sider a kid found, the other 3 were killed by a cat. the mother was released also. he plans on keeping the snake. I hope he breeds her (or him). the mother was found in Kansas City

mmiles Mar 01, 2009 08:02 PM

A kid that use to work for me found a red sided female in the woods behind their apartment. She ended up having babies. I dont know how many babies she had, but I do know that four of them looked like this one. I assume obviously that the parents were het for this mutation so I would guess that the litter was probably around sixteen. I asked him where the other three like this one were and he said his cat had eaten the other three. I asked him if I could have the last one before his cat killed that one. He said ok. He said that he had released the mom and the normal looking babies back behind their apartment. My friend Rick and I are going to the same locale to collect some females to breed with this one I have which is a male. I plan to collect babies from the area if possible and raise them up so there wont be any sperm retention issues from mature females that may have been bred in the past. This should be a fun project. Thanks for your comments everybody. Mark

It seems interessting to me what the normals in your area are looking like.

Hey Mark,
Do you think you could post a picture of a close up of this snakes head so we could get a good look at it's eye?
Thanks again
