Breeding Advice Sought

JMo Feb 28, 2009 08:26 PM

I'm a first time breeder - I plan on putting together my male amel and my female snow. They have been brumating since Thanksgiving - I plan to put them back on heat tomorrow,March 1. I plan on feeding for the first time next Saturday March 7.

Am I on track or should I be considering some other plan? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Jim

Jim,

You're right on track. There's a lot of "wiggle room" when it comes to brumation. I've sucessfully brumated corns for as little as three weeks. Many people cool their snakes from Thanksgiving to Valentine's Day.

As far as feeding, there's nothing wrong with waiting a week, but some corns will eat sooner. I've had plenty begin eating the day after coming out of brumation. I observe the snake's behavior - they seem much more alert when they're hungry.

As you probably already know, chances are they'll want to breed after their first shed following being warmed up.

Tim's right of course.
You can wait a week or feed sooner. I've fed them two days after bringing them up and I've waited a week. Both have worked.
Just feed them well and in about three to five weeks when they shed, put them together.
Good luck

Tim and Jimmie - thanks for your responses and confirmation. I'm sure I'll have some more questions for the forum as the process unfolds. As we progress hopefully I'll be able to take a few photos and post them. Thanks again.
