I was in the canefields of s. FL yesterday and not having much luck looking for kings when after walking from one board to another I turned around to see this at my feet...

now, either I was very tired AND blind enough to walk right over him the first time or he was just cruisin' out after being disturbed...

Either way, he made my day..At least I saw some color after all.
The yellows in the area can be very deep yellow espcially around the head/neck region..Little white with faint stripes.

Wow!That is a screamer for sure.
I'm afraid that would have had to come home with me.Is it legal in Florida?

It is legal in FL (provided not in a protected area)and they are one of the most commonly seen/successful snakes and if I were to breed any yellows this year it just might be this "phase".

Maybe we're just getting old, Mark, but I can remember several times being so focused on a target species, as to overlook a more obvious animal that wasn't the target!
.
Great animal. Great pics.
Thanks for that one.

Well thanks for pointing out the age thing! I left that option out on purpose... hahaha
but...it has happened and it seems I'm often just as happy with the "incidental" finds.

and he was actually a bit better in person. It was so bright out I could not see the view finder of my camera so just kinda winged it. Some subtle colors in the mix with the nice yellows.
I really like them.

Truth is... I bet I've got more response from this photo than I would have with a king from that area if I posted it on the kingsnake forum.

Well somebody beat me to the "getting old" comment but come on man!!! That is a screamer!!!!

Looking at an animal like that it makes me wonder why more people are not into yellows?? I guess it is because they are too commone and the herptaculture folks want the high priced stuff instead. I have kept quite a few and I have loved all of them!! That one is certainly a beauty Mark!! Nice find brother!!

hahaha...only as old as I feel..(oops that's pretty old today)
I too have found some fugly yellows but as a rule, they are great snakes. I can't remember a yellow that wouldn't feed. Either wc or cb.
Here's a yellow one fron DeSoto a couple years back..
