stuck shed in nose?

shannon20019 Mar 02, 2009 07:57 AM

Hey all!! I posted a couple of days ago about my new ball having some shedding problems. After the soak, all of the skin came off within minutes. However, a piece stayed on his nose. I watched him trying to scratch it off on the screen top of his cage. we had him out for just a few minutes the other night and he was gaping a bit and when he'd open his mouth he made a slight "popping" sound. so at this point, I'm not sure if this is a R.I. or just stuck shed in the nose. There is no wheezing and no discharge, which I've heard can crop up later. The humidity in my tank is always an issue due to the screen top, however I put a shed box in his tank(plastic tub with dampened coco bedding). I haven't seen him use it yet though. Should I bump the heat up in his tank just in case? right now hot side is mid 80's with a basking spot of 90-92.Is there anything else that I should do or watch for?thanks for all the help!

I think you said you got the snake from a local pet store. As tough as it is, I would bring him back. A bad shed, along with a possible RPI within a week is not good. Not saying that he does have an RPI, but sounds like you've had more headaches than you should have already. Bring him back, and buy from a trusted BP breeder. Whatever you do, I hope your little guy turns out OK.

Can you see the shed in his nose? If there is any sticking out, I have had luck taking tweezers, holding the neck and head securely and easily pulling the shed out of his nose VERY CAREFULLY!!! If this doesn't help, it's a trip to the vet for you.
