Awesome Pseustes sulphureus!!!!!!!

Snakesunlimited1 Mar 02, 2009 02:00 PM

I got to handle this snake in a serpentarium in Peru and fell in love!! Wow what an animal!! Seems as though no one is really working with these and I think that is something I am going to have to change...

Dick Bartlett's book "Cornsnakes and other Ratsnakes" made them out to be nasty but I am guessing that is like all the other import animals that come in as sick sub adults to adults from the wild. They get mishandled, mistreated, and mis-kept and we call them "mean". This snake was a sweet heart and easily over 9 feet of awesome!! I think with a generation or two in captivity we will have some sweet snakes.

I already posted this over in the indigo forum but I figured many don't go all over KS.com so I would post here too. Anybody know of any animals anywhere near this nice in the states?? I am sure some oldtimer that is not online has these, they are too cool...

Hey Jason, that thing is massive. It actually makes you look smaller LOL! joking aside. What a beauty! A friend of mine had a seven foot import a few years back, it ate rats like they were going out of style, and it didn't seem to have an agressive bone in it's body. I never understood the bad wrap any species gets. I have a texas rat that is the sweetest little thing and an eastern fox that came straight form the gates of hell. Ya' know what I mean. Jerry

Bill Schapher told me he was working towards breeding yellow tails about a year ago, and has been getting rid of alot of his colubrid collection to do so. You might want to talk to him.

The common name that I see is the "Giant Bird Eater" and there is a second snake that is a different sub that is call "bird eater" both are also called "bird eating snake" or "giant bird eating snake" and they are similar to spilotes aka tiger rats. Arboreal, fast, big south american rat/racers. Not our traditional "ratsnakes" much like the asian rat snakes like the beautys. If you want to see the sub called the "bird eating snake" take a look over in the indigo sub forum. Of the two that one is much more likely to get very popular in the US. It is the corn snake counter with this snake being the black or yellow rat in South America. I also want some of that sub because they are just stunning red and orange snakes, worth a look for sure. "SoLA" posted them, take a peak over there.

A friend of mine, Bill (sighthunter) has several pseustes. His will just as soon kill you as look at you, they're very calculating, and they aim for your face! They are a beautiful animal though. Watching a ten footer rocket out of a vision cage with the neck flared out is definitely impressive!

That's funny because all 3 of mine are very easy going, sure they can be very cage defensive but once out are no problem same with my Spilotes. I do think there's something to be said about the ability to handle the snake but some snakes are just uber psycho.
