I have a question about Black Pines (probably a dumb one) . . .

powergeckos Sep 11, 2003 10:07 AM

. . . Why are juvi black pines more valuable when they are all black vs ones that have the white juvi markings. Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't all adults turn jet black anyway? (they do all turn black, right?)

Thanks for helping me clear this up.

BTW - I have a Black Pine I bought from a Pet Store that John Meltzer supplies - wow are they cool animals. My 1st pit and I enjoy it - he's tame as a kitten.

No they don't all turn solid black, some do some don't. Solid black babies will stay as black or get blacker as they age. In the natural state in the majority of the range most of the black pines have at least a little pattern when viewed in direct sunlight. Our line of black pines ( llyoyd lemke line ) are pretty black, but as they are just like they were when they were originally collectted and have not been outbred there is still a touch of pattern on them. Personally I like the size of them and the minimal pattern does not bother me, but some folks are strivng for more perfection than Mother Nature has provided and are color breeding them Which is a slow and tedious process. Note in the pic below the small amount of brown on the end on the one on the rights tail area.

Good Luck,
