Why are racks heated w/ smaller heater?

Omnivorous Mar 02, 2009 08:02 PM

Most rack or tub type enclosures seem to have small heaters compared to their size. I see designs for the 32 quart 16"x24" tubs and they mostly are heated with 3" or 4" flexwatt.I have had one guy say get an 11" strip but most designs I have seen use 3" or 4". A similar sized cage with a compareable floor space would normaly have 1/3 heated or around 8" so how come such a small sized strip? Is it just to save money they being run with a thermostat so why wouldnt you have a normal sized heated zone?

This is running the flexwatt across the shelves not on the back.

The floor space of a 32 qt. tub is actually under 22". The heat from 4" flexwatt is not isolated to just those 4 inches. When applied correctly (an inch or two in from the bottom end of the tub) it creates a more than adequate area of heat.

You say most rack designs use 3 or 4 inch flexwatt and you have 1 person suggest 11". What are the odds that those using the 3 or 4 inch flexwatt might know what they are doing? IMO, 11" is too much heat for a 32 qt. tub.

bsarrah made a good point - don't assume what people do is always optimum.

Alot depends on the type of snake kept. A strip of 3-inch Flexwatt is plenty for a small king or milksnake, but may not be for a boa unless the room is heated as well. So it all depends.

Do what makes sense for the animal and your ambient conditions.
