Deformed baby...Any chance of survival???

skmcwilliams Sep 11, 2003 10:31 AM

I had a lady give me a clutch of eggs to hatch. She said that the female had laid three clutches before and all the eggs died, so she didn't even want to bother with them. I know the mother/father bearded were purchased from sandfire dragon ranch at the same time, so inbreeding may be the issue. Out of the 18 eggs only 6 of the eggs stayed good to hatch out of those six 2 are deformed. One in the pic I call "Egore". He has almost like a second skull and only one eye. The other is the opposite he only has half a skull and only one eye. I didn't give them a chance at all but now they are both three weeks and are eating great, they chase the crickets around with their good eye and eat um up. Has anyone else gotten deformed beardies to live a normal life? I am already getting attached to them and my husband says not to bother because they won't make it. He said you never see an adult with huge deformities. And he's right I have been heavy into beardies for 10 years and have never seen an adult with such problems.

Three weeks is a darn good start. If it's just extra bone on his skull, I would think chances are good. Of course you can only see the exterior, what may be going on inside could be a whole new ballgame.
As long as they are eatin' , poopin' and baskin', I'd sure give them every chance available.

give them the best chance you can, it sounds like they are doing well! if there isnt more to it then meets the eye (meaning other health issues stemming from the deformities)dragons can live with deformities, missing limbs etc, just fine, they dont know they are different or even that perhaps one eye is missing, you are doing great, its great that you are trying for these little ones, every dragon deserves a chance they are all such wonderful lil creatures

If you do not have the heart to put it down, at least make sure it never gets within 5 feet of another dragon of the opposite sex.

I think they stand a chance as long as they are doing the everyday normal beardie things. You'll find out as they grow. You don't know how their head is going to grow. Could be problems, or they could grow just find. Have to wait and see. It's so good that you are giving them a chance.

This may actually sound "bad" to some people, but...........

I would like to get my hands on a "deformed" beardie. One that can actually grow and live, but has some form of visible issues.

My children's school want me to "set up" and do a 2 day educational show and I am sure other schools would be interested too. I would like to have a "special" beardie to show what "can go wrong".... does that make sense?
