Once Female turned....male?!

gexclipse81 Mar 03, 2009 10:53 AM

Hey all, just curious if this has happened to anyone else... I discovered last night that my previously proven female... is now a male... I heard some scuffling in the "roomies" cage and look in to see a dirty deed being done... Nonetheless they are now separate as this was never my intent with these two. Anyway, just wondering if anyone else has run into this before. Any good links to more info on this is appreciated. Reptile science amazes me!

I don't see how a proven female could turn out to be a male.....ever. Unless it's similar to the gynadromorphic leopard gecko that was discovered, I would say someone sold you a gecko that was never proven to be anything or they accidentally switched the geckos.

She was proven to me. I mated her with a male previously and she laid eggs that season. I was just starting with incubation and all at that point and never really got into it but I was able to successfully hatch one of them. Knowing she was a female and my other was a female as well I put them in the same cage. Only to notice the other day that the one who had previously been proven was the 'aggressing one' and i was able to see her/him cleaning themself off after the deed.

...........but did you actually see a hemipene? Or did you just see some mating-like behavior?

It's not gynadromorphic as it has a solid coloring and not "split". Definitely saw a hemipene. It was red and I saw it get retracted and everything. Just as some background information, I've had leopard geckos for almost 10 years now. I'm not claiming to be a professional "owner" but I am well aware of the differences between males and females. Believe me when I say it was just as confusing to me when I saw what I did...

I'm not questioning what you saw, but I simply can't wrap my head around a gecko changing its sex. As far as I'm aware, this would be considered a "world first". You should contact Ron Tremper about this matter, I'm sure he would take a personal interest in it.
