how to stop rats from chewing

squidlyjoe Mar 03, 2009 07:30 PM

I keep my feeders rats in a rack i built and it works fine until recently it seems like they all got the bright idea to chew through the plastic containers they are in. Is there anything I can put in theyre bins to keep them from chewing?
Thanks

Nope, you can try to give them something to amuse them. Rats are intelligent creatures and can easily get bored living in a box with nothing to do. They fill this time by chewing. Toss in a paper towel tube, a chunk of wood, etc. to keep them busy.
It has also been mentioned that some rats are just genetically wired to chew. I tend to feed of chewers before they do any real damage. I have 20.100 breeder rats, and none of them chew.

Totally agreed, selective breeding of my rat colony has resulted in calm handleable rats that never bite, never chew, never jump etc. Cleaning is a breeze, just pick em up and move em. smaller ones by the scoooped up double handful!!!

Selective breeding by following "the rules"

Not produce - fed off
Sick - fed off
Fight with others - fed off
Kill babies - fed off
Chew - fed off
Jumpy - fed off
Bite me - whacked on cement, then fed off

I follow the same principle!

I also use metal J channel for tub sliders. they can't get their teeth in the plastic.

I give them no reason to live with full food troughs and ample water supply.
