Keeled scales question

Steve_Craig Mar 03, 2009 08:47 PM

If I breed a northern pine to a black milk, what would I get?.... Easy guys, Just kidding Now for the real question. Are the scales on pines more keeled then gophers & bulls? Or are they all pretty much the same? It seems, atleast visually, that Northern & Southern pines have heavier keeled scales then some of the other pits. Was just curious if that was the case or not. Hello Steve,

The scales of pines and bulls are more heavily keeled than those of gopher snakes.

Thanks Phil. I appreciate the information. I know you & Will are gearing up for the spring. Looking forward to seeing what you guys find and take pics of this year. I'm ready for spring myself. Steve

Me and you both Steve. Winter has seemed especially long this season and I look forward to visiting some of my scaley friends in their tin houses lol!

Well spring is here for sure. Painted lady butterflies are all around, We saw a nice little Crotalus atrox sunny by its burrow last week as well as a rather nice big Sonoran gophersnake female out looking for her first meal of 2009 and this morning I was graced with the sighting of a copulating pair of sidewinders!

I know I will pay for this in mid June when forced to be out in the 110 degree heat but for now I am happy to have left the agonizingly slow late winter and early spring months of the midwest behind!

PS I know it is a bad image but check out how dark the facial markings are on this old Kankakee female. Darkest face I have ever seen on a bull!

I'm envious right now John. The upland chorus frogs are calling behind the house and the waters and garters should be out and about here this week. Things are moving forward even though winter has been slow in releasing its grip on us this year.

Sounds like you are off to a great start!

Outstanding specimen of bullsnake. Those from Kankakee are my personal favorite.

Roughly speaking, scales on Pituophis are more keeled the further EAST that the taxa is found.
