ovulation

hayseed Mar 04, 2009 10:36 AM

I have a quick question.

I finally have my nice pair of coastals mating. I've posted on here before about their LACK of mating. I waited patiently and now they have been locked up on and off for at least a week. Today I noticed what might actually be her ovulation, as a seriously swelled up region similar to after a large meal. So, I think I've seen copulation, and likely ovulation.

What would be the timing now for the expectation of egg laying? I have an incubator ready and waiting. Compared to other snakes I have bred, can I expect her to have a pre-lay shed and then lay about a week later? How long might that be from now if she is just now copulating and ovulating?

Thanks!

First might I say that I don't have alot of experience breeding reptiles , but have done my share of research. If they have only been at it for a week or so it seems imo that it's a little soon for ovulation. Perhaps what you are witnessing is the development of egg follicles. Hopefully someone with more experience can comment to help you. Good luck! David

If the female was thick and ready, ovulation can take place rather quickly. I've witnessed it take place within a week after the first copulation. This was a case where the female was in the presence of one male (which showed no interest), and then bred with another.

If yours were together, but the male showed no interest until now, it is possible that the female experienced follicular maturation prior to copulation. The best thing to do is keep them together until she sheds, starts refusing the male, or the male shows no more interest. Good luck!

most boids are induced ovulators. The presence of a male before copulation will may times be enough to start the process.

If your certain you've seen her ovulate she should go into a shed, after shed sheds itll be about 24-30 days and she'll drop eggs, that is of course if shes gravid. However, nice big lumps are a good sign, at least in breeding season

Good luck.

Thanks everyone for your advice. These two have been put together off and on for the last month. I had not seen copulation until about a week ago but I did see. a number of times, the female showing interest, with her tail wipping around like a cat, and her restless movement. I actually wondered if there may have been some copulation that I had not witnessed. The copulation I did see really started after I brought a new male out of quarantine and put him in an enclosure near these two. I definitely think that is what got my reluctant male going.

I was not sure if the "swelling" is follicle development or is what I've seen reffered to as "pre-ovulation swelling". Either way, it was very noticable and seemed exactly like what I've read about.

This is my first time breeding carpets. Wish me luck!

I attached a a few nice pics of my beautiful female (the one in question).

Get raedy for eggs, man! Have you given any thought to artificial vs. maternal incubation?

I plan to do artificial incubation. I have a few incubators set up and ready to go, incubating some leopard gecko eggs right now. I've incubated gecko eggs and corn snake eggs, but this is my first time with carpets.

I feel like a virgin.
