musky smell

tripletoes Mar 04, 2009 10:39 PM

one of my male burm. browns secretes a musky smell at times. sometimes he does it when he is adjitated or stressed like on the way to the vet or whenever he is in a car. the other time he will do it is just whenever...he just does it....is he attracting a mate? also do males build nests b/c i sware he will gather a mound of debris with his front feet and sit on it. he is no doubt a male as he avidly persues females to the point that i have to remove him from the females at times. also one of my females trys to mount him sometimes is this normal?

I'm not sure about his musky smell.Males will start nest gathering.I've only seen emys emys do it but its not common in my collection. It will make you say hummmmm.Yep,any combanation will mount and go through the motions.Females will go so far as to open their mouths and grown like a male.I've had some do this after 18 yrs of not doing it.Always learning. It will mess your mind! You will know when its a female building a "nest".It will be intence,go on awhile and defend it from the male or anything else.Vic....... pic they clear a lot of brush

yeah its the darndest thing he spends all day sometimes gathering debris into a pile...nothing as big as the nest in your pic! lol by the way i always look forward to seeing the pics in your posts. the smell is not a bad smell...i was hopeing you were going to tell me this was a common thing with attracting a female? this one is a wild caught emmys emmys ltc with good weight. how often should i have him wormed?

no no sorry if that post was a bit miss leading. the one in the pic was a eastern boxie. (my first love) i have been worming him every year for the past 3 years...my real concern is passing parisites to the cb mantouri. should this be a big concern?

Only if kept together,or possable transfer from handeling. Once a year is good but fecal check ups are a good idea.I dont try to keep mine 100% parasite free all year.I believe its a overload that is harmfull. Its a stress thing,if they are under stress the worms will take them out.Stress being defind as immune system being compromised.Lets say it warm, eating good, good environment it would be doing just fine, but the same animal that was cold, dehydrated, poor diet,it would go down hill and the worms could cause many complacations, like infections in the gut.I judge the health of my Manouria by looking in their mouth. They should have a pinkish color with some yellow on top of the tongue. If very pale or gray-ish/whiteish the Mt.Tortoise may be on the verge of becoming sick. Also sunken in eye sockets are a very bad sign..Check out the color in the mouth of this happy adult male emys emys.Vic.......

thanks i will always check the color of their mouth for now on. i will take a fecal in from each of them to make sure one of them isnt out of control before i mix them. thanks again!!
