pithons Mar 05, 2009 08:46 PM

Other than a retic, burm, and rock python, what is the next largest. And what is the 5th largest.

Anacondas and the Australian Amethystine are in the top 5 as well.

The Australian scrub python, Morelia kinghorni is number 4 with a confirmed record of 23 feet. Others coming up behind it are the Oenpelli, the Papuan, and Olive.

Scrub python reached 23 feet.. Whoa! Thats hard to believe

Average adult female Australian scrubs run 13 to 15 feet. These were the Amethystine python until reclassified in 2000.

in the over 20' club you have (in order)
P reticulatus
P sebae
P molurus
M amethistina
A papuana (some claims say larger then 20', not sure I believe they can break the 20' mark, but I certainly don't think 17-18 is out of the question.. and I have personally handled a 16' animal)

In 15' club
M oenpelliensis
L olivaceus
M s mcdowelli (rare for one to get that big, but it is possible)

I am sure there are others in the 15' range on rare occassions as well, and many more that can hit the 10' marker.

by the way - the list I made is length, not weight.. there is always a debate on largest.. is it the longest, or the heaviest... the order will change if we go by weight.

I wouldn't handle a 16' Papuan by myself.

The scrub python group was revised in 2000 into five distinct species. The large Australian amethystine python is now the Australian Scrub python Morelia kinghorni. The true amethystine python is now the smaller species Morelia amethystina from Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. It's hard anymore not to refer to the Australian species as the amethystine.
