Good looking lizard, I've always liked the griseus. Spirited. I had a small one maybe a third the size of the one your holding grab onto my thumb one time .

No I didn't breed them , I originally got a few to resell but ended up hanging onto them for about eight months. Their not common in the trade. As far as where I stand . I really like them they have that old school T- REX heart. Defiantly not a lizard for the bearded dragon light FM crowd.

Yours are looking good. I dont handle mine unless the shootout the cage wile im feeding. If your goal is breeding activity I wouldn handle them at all. Also change the substate or you wont see any either.

jock Mar 10, 2009 05:12 PM

what do you use? i cant really change it now bc there is so much! dang!!

have you goten eggs!?

and what all have you used for substrate? from what i have seen 80% or so of the wild pics they are around a sand based terrain. also the only record that i have seen of there wild nesting, is in the sand... http://books.google.com/books?id=0e3OuHRRoIQC&pg=PA123&lpg=PA123&dq=desert monitor&source=web&ots=p7Xin90xSp&sig=76QZvzDudJ5hMM1zZdNEWE_rkkg&hl=en&ei=yRuNSf2ZNse_tgeLhPCHCw&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=5&ct=result#PPA127,M1... here is a link that i have found! i know that they are not wild but that is really all the info i have found! i am going to keep the sand in there and change it next year! if i get breeding then it will awesome and as far as your info goes, sand will be a new one! but as for as for the substrate what are you using? and what humidity level did you get breeding?

did you male turn red? my male is turning a red hue all over! starting from the end of the tale all the way up to his throat . my females throat is pink though her back is not. please let me know what you found with your breeding! as for captive info is very rare!

I too have a pair or trio of griseus, it is near impossible to tell the sexes from what I've heard. So you say you're not going to get any breeding activity from a sand substrate...Why not?

Jake and I have both reported breeding activity, I cannot be 100% sure and I don't know about Jake. But I think I have seen breeding activity a few times.

Mine are not coloring up as much as your are Jake, but you did take your out a little earlier than mine. I also may not have as colorful one as you.

Jake-My Griseus are eating better and I'll try to post pics as soon as possible...I'm in finals weeks and am keeping it to basics.

My substrate is 75% sand 25% dirt. When allowed to burrow these guys go nuts. Streight sand will not hold a burrough. As for color Both of mine show those pink hughes when I bring them out of cooling for the first month or so Im not sure why. As for breeding Mine have gone nuts The last two years after they came out of cooling but I have yet to get eggs or have a female that even looks gravid. Maybe this year Ill Get lucky.

jock Mar 11, 2009 07:18 AM

Luc- good luck on your finals! I too have many test this week! yeah mine are back on there usual eating habits! I am now feeding live mice bc they wont take thawed once! idk why but they just don't eat them! im going the Dixie show this weekend and im going to start a mouse colony! cant wait to see some pics!!;D

irherps have you ever used anything other that sand/soil? if so how old were your animals? as far a going nuts? mine are by far more active this year than ever bf!!!

I don't think I have seen any breeding activity:/ I am not sure so ill just say that I haven't. but over the past two weeks my female has become more and more submissive to the male. when they first came out she did not tolerate him approaching her at all! now she lowers her head and lays flat, then plays hard to get by moving slowly away! I have never seen this behavior in the past!
also have you tried to separate them after they stop breeding? im gong to try that this year and seen what happens (if I get breeding! I have read that in the wild that in dense populations, the female will not conceive. what are our findings on that subject?

cheers
jake

As far as substrates I used streight sand for the first year of thier life. They where not near as active as they are now. They are currently three years old. They have never locked up in the open but I use a miror to see uner the log were the usually lock up. As far as seperating them I have a few times. In this case the female attacted the male on two seperate ocasions I have never seen the male be agressive towards the female. I also seperate them when I cool them.
