This girl is driving me nuts!!! (pic's)

Joel_Thomas Mar 06, 2009 06:39 PM

I posted some pic's of her about 10 days ago when I noticed some slight swelling on her that went down and then again today some more swelling (a little more pronounced) She was being courted pretty heavy Saturday and into Sunday according to my wife, I was out of town and could not observe.

Has anyone had there females ovulate their ovaries at separate times? She has been coiling into the heat conservation coil more often and the male seems to be leaving her more often as well.

I have not noticed the huge swelling that I had seen in the past with my BCI and the three litters I produced with the BCC several years ago I never did see an ovulation for certain.

I am going to watch and see how she looks in the next couple of days before I decide to return the heat for her.

I've heard of double ovulations, but never witnessed one. I wonder at times, how many of these double ovulations are actually the swell that occurs during follicular development first, (Pre Ov Swell) and then the ovulation occurs, and gets called a second ovulation. ?? Maybe the swell you've witnessed first was the follicles being developed. ??

Not to discount the whole theory of double ovulation, but it seems to me that the whole act of ovulation is triggered the same way as most animals, with the release of chemicals/hormones from the hypothalamus or something like that. So when this happens, I'm not sure they can hold back one side or the other to prevent full ovulation, as this is a biological time mechanism. Sorta like asking your girlfriend to hold off on her "time" a couple weeks longer, or only have half a cycle. LOL

Could be wrong, but that's how my mind runs with it.

Yeah I am now sure these are not actual ovulations since they seem to hang around for a while, and in my past experience ovulations normally last about a day or so.

I probably need to find other things to do instead of stare at these snakes all day Ha!

Thanks for your reply I appreciate your time.

These are my notes on Rose's last breeding ('07/'08). I also have notes from my '06/'07 season in there but they weren't NEARLY as detailed. You can see I saw her swelling multiple times in the last season. I posted a picture timeline one time and you can see the same thing in that post.

A curious thing about this last season is that I didn't expect to breed her, but then I looked in towards the end of February and her body weight looked great, so I dropped the temps and gave it a try!

Hope this helps!

'06/'07 season:
Dropped temps gradually from end of Oct til end of Nov. Turned off heat for one month, then turned back on and introduced on 12/23.
Noticed swelling 2/28/07 and she had her POS on 3/31/07 and delivered 120 days POS on 7/29 around 8:30pm which was 152 days after last observed swelling (ovulation??).

'07/'08 season:
Lowered temps throughout Dec. Turned off heat 1/1/08, turned back on to 85 on 1/14, to 92 on 1/29.
Introduced: 2/24/08 - dropped hot spot back down to 85
Male pulsing and tail waiving: 3/2/08
Slight swelling: 3/3/08 (probably similar to swelling on 2/28/07)
MAJOR swelling on 3/10/08 (ovulation?? pre-ovulation??)
Some decrease in swelling 3/11/08
Male hiding in water bowl after repeated attempts to remove him 3/12/08
Witnessed copulation early AM 3/13/08
Rose returned to normal size 3/15/08
Male heavily courting for hours (5:30pm-after midnight) 3/17/08 - tail waiving frequently with pulsing but no witnessed copulation despite looking... a lot
Rose on cool side Mr. I on the other. Rose is noticeably but not substantially swollen just past midesection 3/18/08
Mr. I pulsing and tail waiving. Was just aligned and then I introduced male Cay Caulker to stimulate. Mr. I immediately started pulsing. 3/22/08
Fed a small meal on 3/23/08 and reintoduced on 3/25/08
Aligned with tail waiving and saw sperm on Rose's side - Rose began to move her tail abruptly and Mr. I held on like he was attached although I didn't see copulation - 3/29/08
Possible ovulation - swelled dramatically horizontally and only slightly vertically although backbone was exposed a bit - 3/30/08
Mr. I was all over last night (although not very active), confirmed copulation this morning and she's still pretty swollen - 3/31/08
Fed a small meal (medium rat), looks like she ate an XL - 4/3/08
Swelling has gone back to normal before meal, reintroduced male this morning - 4/5/08
Has swollen HUGE. Girth of a baseball. Saw some vertical swelling this morning and this afternoon - 4/11/08
Put Rose in sweater box w/ Mr. I 2 days ago and she swelled a tad more, pulled her out tonight and put her back in her regular cage. - 4/16/08
Unsure if it's important, lots of VERY dry urates in the cage, obviously from Rose, too big to be Mr. I, done overnight - 4/17/08
Ovulation!!! - 140 days (20 days from ovulation to POS, then 120 days after that) from now is approximate due date (9/4/08) - 4/17/08
Witnessed copulation!!?? - 4/20/08
Separated Mr. I from Rose because she is going blue. She's probably 3 days into the cycle, fed a medium rat - 4/25/08
POS today, due around September 2nd (120 days POS) - 5/5/08
Fed a medium rat - 5/11/08
Fed a medium rat about every 10 days until 70 days POS.
Birth on 9/8/08 around noon 126 days POS and 144 days post ovulation

if they would read the book, GEEEZZZZ I thought that my notes were detailed until I read yours but that is why I know that I can count on you for solid information.

I do appreciate your input, even though I produced lots of BCI and a few litters of BCC several years ago, it feels like my first time after returning to the hobby.

Nature is calling, time to print it off LOL...
