Thanks His orange keeps getting better with every shed

BDlvr Mar 07, 2009 02:18 PM

Where did you get him?

CDP75 Mar 07, 2009 03:51 PM

A place we never buy reptiles or birds at...Petsmart. We didn't want to wait for the next reptile show road trip. They had him in a seperate tank listed as "fancy bearded dragons". He looked way different from the others and I liked him better

He looks like one I got cheap from the Dachiu's years ago. Just a little color. As an adult he is a beautiful orange dragon. All the dark went away after about a year.

You got a pic of your guy somewhere one here??
That would be just awesome if Sydney is mostly orange. His dark spots have gotten lighter with all the sheds.

I bought mine from petsmart too. The funny thing is I feel you are getting the regects from a breeder which basically you are. So you get the ones that do not show as much color or size in the first few weeks. This can always change which you seem to have found. I love my beardie from petsmart and would not trade him for the world. And for sure as much as people try to not buy from the big box pet store I feel they seem to care for their aniamls more than the small pet stores around my area. They put up money for animals needing help. They give free lessons for new dog owners and do not even sell dogs. They also will take any animals that owners cannot keep anymore And their hours are amazing so i can get crickets from there even after a late day at work. For all the downs you can say about a big pet store they have many ups as well.

The biggest down is the prices they charge. They are an outright ripoff for supplies. Double the price you can pay online. Convenience just has a big cost.

I cant get over the mark-up on thier animals. I saw a red oketee corn snake selling for 189.00!! Come on! Thats a ten dollar snake at a show!! Drives me nuts.

faygo19 Mar 08, 2009 09:46 AM

I agree the prices are high but when you are paying for the size building you can't nickle and dime it. If you did that you would turn into that pet store on the corner with dogs in very small cages and the whole place smells like pooh

PHLdyPayne Mar 08, 2009 02:31 PM

Yeah, pet stores have a high markup..usually 2-4 times the cost of buying it directly from the breeder. Then again by buying it from the breeder, you are cutting out the middle men... a pet store gets their animals from a wholesaler who in turns gets theirs from breeders..so you have 2-3 (or more) mark ups so everybody in the 'chain' makes their profit.

But...if you add in the cost to drive to the nearest reptile show, plus food, entry fee etc.. it may end up being the same cost..if all you are buying is the animal. For me to go to a show, it costs me about $30-$80 in gas depending on gas prices, plus any food I decide to eat...then cost of animals etc. If I am only going to spend $30-$80 it is usually worth it for me to just buy at the petstore..though not always.

Yep, that's the main reason we chose the store. We would have spent more in gas plus lunch to drive to the nearest show. Not to mention how early we'd have to get up b/c the earlier the better if you want a good choice.

CDP75 Mar 08, 2009 12:53 PM

Don't get me wrong I like Petsmart alot. Just try to avoid buying animals from there other than fish. I got a bird from there last year that ended up being sick. A few years ago I got a russian tort there that was also sick and loaded with parasites.

CDP75 Mar 08, 2009 12:57 PM

Yeah, I don't like the prices on their cornsnakes too. I got kicked out of one here b/c someone was about to buy a corn and I had the same color hatching at my house. They changed their minds and followed me home..hahaha.

Also the russian tort I got from them, they claimed was CB but I highly doubt that b/c of how cheap it was.

As for my beardie, I'm very happy with him!! We got him at the one across town but the other one had skinny, lethagic dragons.

BDlvr Mar 08, 2009 07:39 AM

First off keep in mind my only digital camera is my cell phone which does not do justice to dragon colors. And of course Toby is in shed right now too.

One picture is of 3 dragons. Toby is the dark one. Simone is next to Taylor the very light one. Simone is the dragon that recently had surgery.

The other picture is Toby (near) and Simone. Simone just moved back in with him last night. She seems to be doing much better.

Oh, they are pretty!!!
