breeding question

54podge Mar 08, 2009 12:48 AM

so I introduced my male brooks to my female T-Lav Brooks today. A lot of the herky-jerky movements were displayed by both for a 1/2 hour before both retired to different hides.

About an hour later, the male seemed shot out of a canon and proceeded to agressively chase the female around the enclosure. I left them alone and don't know if copulation took place or not. Tonight i took the male and retired him to hid cage to give my poor female a rest.

My question is: would my male's behavior indicate that my female put out some phermones after their first meeting? I mean, he acted like a completely sex-starved teenager when he reemerged from his hide. She let him crawl over her, but continued to rattle her tail and her jerky movements.

It sounds to me like your female is ready to go, but your female is not ready just yet.. Which is very common.

Keep trying every couple/few of days until the female is more receptive to the male. You can either stay in the room and observe the pairing until you see them lock up, or you can switch your bedding to newspaper for the breeding season, leave your snakes together for a few hours and then it will be very easy to see if they bred.

Good Luck

Leave them together. Do not take the male out until you see the female is 100% definetly gravid with eggs.

How long before she would show gravid? I worry about her getting exhausted!

30 days from fertilization she will lay eggs. You should be able to tell before that but a mistake people make is the ovum and follicles swell and can feel like eggs. So best to leave him in there until she is ready to burst unless you know how to feel for eggs..

After fertilization the male seems to lose interest as well/

awesome, thanks.

Another question: does it matter which enclosure I put them in? I put him in hers (15G) to reduce her stress, but his cage is a 20L and offers more space for them to, well you know. Should I put her favorite hide in his cage? What about her water bowl?

Lastly, is there a link to a good Brooksi incubation setup and schedule? I know you are the "Brooks Man", so I am glad I've got your ear

You should always introduce the male into the females cage. I prefer to brumate my pairs together because bonding makes them more compatiple...probably why your female is fighting off his advances.

If you want you can transfer the shavings and things from her 15 gallon into the 20 gallon tanke. This way the scent will still be all around and they will have more room. Either way the size of the tank right now is none issue.

Good luck and post some pics if you get a chance to see them hook up. Also FEED that female all she can eat.
