Dumeril Monitor Information request

tray Sep 11, 2003 01:11 PM

Hello, this is my first time here. I just recently aquired a Dumeril Monitor and I'm looking for any information I can about them. I'd estimate it to be about 2 feet in length. It seems healthy, though I'm not an expert there of course. I've only owned bearded dragons throughout my life, so monitors are new to me.

Currently the cage set up is 6 X 4 X 4. The pet store owner informed me a few general rules about monitors, but she didn't know any specifics about dumerils. One thing she didn't go into detail about was the lighting. I asked her about UV lighting, and she basically said it was up to me. Can anyone tell me how much and what kind of UV lighting do monitors need? Dumerils specifically.

As far as its temperment, it seems to be friendly. When I purchased it, it climbed onto my shoulder and sat there for about 20 minutes. It 'seems' like a docile monitor. I do know enough to still be careful around it though.

Anyway, basically I'm looking for any websites or any information at all on these guys. I tried google and only got a few general monitor breeders, nothing specific about the dumerils themselves.

Thanks in advance for all your advice.

Google gives a flood of info if you type Dumeril's Monitor, as I spelled it.

Alright let me be more specific. I typed in Dumeril's Monitors on google, attempting to find a specific web site with specific information about the species. The most info I can find is just various minor descriptions on the species, a few pictures, and some classified ads for them.

What I'm looking for is a care sheet. What they need to eat, what kind of temperatures, common ailments, what size cage is best for them, etc etc.

I'm trying to find specifics. I don't want this reptile to die because I had the temperature to wrong or didn't feed it enough calcium.

Keep them like any other monitor.
They don't need UV.
Mice are a good diet.
Thermal gradient 130f-75f.
They will burrow.
They will use a large water container.
Good Luck

Thank you, temperature and diet was what I was most concerned with. I'll read general monitor care sheets and treat it the same. Again thanks for you help.
