breeding without cooling?

jamesalternafan Mar 08, 2009 03:16 PM

I know some guys have had luck with this and I had a few questions.

Do you keep the same time frame on male to female introduction? That is, from November to feb. do you just keep putting them together or can I just start introducing any time of year if I am not cooling.

How successful is this technique or is it best to just cool them?

Thanks
James Sfregola

i have had many clutches that were the result of non traditional"season" breeding. i alson dont cool my females like others do. i usually pull their tub a little forward in the slot and that seems to be enough. the seek out the cooler side when they want to. i have never turned down my thermostat in breeding season. when i put males in if i dont get breeding i just move him on to the next female. most of the time when i put my males in they go to town within the hour. i would be glad to talk to you more if you have questions. email me at cjsreptiles@aol.com

Many people who have been breeding ball pythons alot longer than I have developed different "recipies" that they use very successfully in breeding ball pythons and my comments are offerred as informational and are not meant to denegrate the successful techniques of others.
I do not cycle lighting or cool the ambient temps in the snake room or hot spots. I use ultrasound to identify females that have begun to develop follicles. "Most of the time" I breed females when they are ready and over the last three years, have had clutces in every month of the year. Using this method males normally breed females within hours of being introduced and I average right at 2 copulations per clutch of eggs laid (about 25% lay a clutch with only one copulation). Also, almost all of the females bred this way (>95%) go on to lay a clutch. For me this method results in a much higher yield of clutches per male (I have gotten as many as 16 clutches from a single male and 10-12 clutches is average.
Young and/or small first time breeder females can be a little different. When you are trying to push a young female you really want to go, I think there are some "teasing" techniques that can be used to try and push them into developing follicles. Cooling does play role here but, but I believe that other factors at techniques play a bigger role.

Can you tell us some of the other techniques?? You've got my attention!! This is my first season so I'm wanting to get as much as I can from my males...

shorten light cycles...

drop himudity...should not be a problem in winter it gets so dry in a house...

drop temps for whole day to months......or have a night drop only........

.....maybe even by being introduced to males will tigger them to start creating follicles....happens in alot of animals....
