Pogona barbata?

Lisabeth Mar 08, 2009 05:28 PM

Does anyone knows how to differenciate a Pogona viticeps from a pogona barbata?
I'm asking because my male BD as a yellow inner mouth and I was worried because my female has a pink inner mouth. So, I was searching on the web and I found that the yellow mouth was one of the caracteristic of this specie (pogona barbata).
I don't think he is sick, he's eating normaly, he's active, etc. Nothing to really worry about, except the color. So, I think this hypothesis may be good, maybe he is a barbata, but how can I know for sure?
I'm posting a pic of him. He is 22" long (nip to tail) and weights 630 grams. Also, I live in Canada...maybe we have different species from the US?

I have one with a yellow mouth that is very dark, almost black but he is not a Barbata and I doubt yours is as well. Here is an identification key to find out for sure.

He is a normal Inland Bearded dragon. Canada doesn't have any different species of bearded dragon from the states or other areas.

When you say his mouth is yellow inside, it is a very pale yellow or much bolder yellow? Has it always been like this or just something you noticed recently?

Thanks for your answers.

Honestly I never really looked at it before or noticed it. I tried to take a picture or it but it's not easy....you can see a little bit of the yellow near my finger.
It's not a crust, it's really his inner mouth skin that is yellowish.

Thanks again!

Hmm not really sure if that is normal or a bad sign....I would suggest monitoring it closely for now. Weigh your dragon and record the weight and weigh once a week to monitor any drops or increases in weight. If she doesn't start loosing weight, stops eating or seems to be lethargic, stool changes consistency, or no urates are produced...then get her to a vet.

The only diseases I can think of that can cause yellowing of tissue is stomatis (mouth rot) though this usually also has redness, white cheese like substances, swelling, excessive drooling etc. So I don't think this is the case. Kidney or liver failure/problems could do this too. There probably are others that I can't think of. It is also possible it is absolutely nothing other than a dragon who's gums are a little different from all the rest.
