How often to feed an adult

rottenweiler9 Mar 08, 2009 09:14 PM

I am like a proud parent, tonight my guy took a med rabbit for the first time on his own. He is 5 years and 13 ft. Can I go to everyother week, or keep once a week.

Thank you

this is how i feed my retics, more specifically my big tiger, who is past the 12foot mark now. i feed him differently depending on the time of year. in the summer, i feed him 4-5lb rabbits every 3-4 weeks, due to it being warmer and their metabolism is higher, and they are more active. which basically for now is about 10-15% of his body weight. in the winter i slow down the frequency but increase the size to about 18-22% of his body weight, but every 6-8 weeks. i am pretty good at estimating his weight and i try to weigh him officially every few months. some people base feeding on frequency, others on pure size of the prey and others on size of the bulge left by food items. i do the % thing and change it up depending on time of year. im not saying its right or the best, but it works and has worked for me. this talking adults of course. i feed hatchlings, yearlings and sub-adults differently, in regard to prey size and frequency

Am I reading this wrong? You feed your 12 foot retics once every 3-4 weeks when their metabolism is high. And once every 6-8 weeks when it is slower???

damn that sounds slack. i feed my 6 footer twice a week.

yeah. that is the way if fed my first 3 retics that i got when i turned 12. they all three just passed away. they lived with my parents because they were just pets but they live to be 20. thats what worked for me. i never recommend anybody feed any certain way, i simply state what worked for me, and all three of my first tics lived long healthy lives. i recommend to feed however and whatever works for each person

Juveniles thrive on a schedule of every 5-7 days, but every 7-10 days is generally fine for a slower growth rate. Adult Females are offered food every 7 days, and adult males are offered every 10-14 days on average. Certain times of year this is increased, and most adults have seasonal fasting which varies from snake to snake during breeding activity. Venturing off in either direction from this regimene is not advised without a very good base knowledge and a keen eye for watching for health issues. We try and feed prey items which at most leave a small lump- preferably a prey item which is appx. the same girth as the snake at its largest point.
