I feed all my breeder rats and mice hamster & gerbil food from Wal-Mart!!!! They are all healthy and cant get any fatter! Hope this helps. Bob

Also forgot to say that they have babies like crazy!!! I've had a rat give me as many as 19 babies (17 live & 2 dead), and a mouse gave me 13 babies and all were alive. So I guess the food is working pretty well for my breeders. Bob

Protein and fat content in rodent food is important to consider. Fat rodents will not last for long term and production will not be at a good rate. Tumors will be more prevalent with a high fat diet. Just some things to consider. We have used dog food, pig and sow pelleted food supplemented with sunflower seeds and finally came around to a Harlan diet with 20% protien. Over the course of 20 years, we have found the Harlan to be the best.
