Keeping FL Box Turtle in NorthEast AL?

exreptile Mar 08, 2009 10:20 PM

Last November, I moved from Florida to northeast Alabama. I have eastern and ornate box turtles, and a Florida box turtle, plus a few different species of tortoises. I'm not worried about the easterns or the ornates, because they came from areas that got very hot weather, but I'm worried about keeping the Florida box turtle out here during the summer. The area my Florida box turtle came from was in the mid to high 80's at the most during the summer. Up here in Alabama, the humidity is high, and it will be in the high 90's, and will go well past 100 at times during the summer. Would it be a good idea to keep the Florida out during the summer?

Thanks,
Cliff

Hm, I'd like to live in that part of Florida. You must have been on a coastal island or something.

You will have to observe the turtle closely. If given proper shaded areas and loose, moist material in which to dig, the turtle should be fine. You may want to consider installing a misting system. Or, you can make sure to spray the pen on hot afternoons.

Thanks. I used to live in Bradenton, and it rarely got above 90 during the summer, but that was hot enough for me. I used to post on here under bonomoc08 before my father got cancer.
