What is the difference between these types of snakes? I know boas give live birth, but is there any other difference? What are your preferences in snake types and why?

There are some nice, inexpensive books that may explain better the info you seek. That is a great starting point.
I keep colubrids because they are tolerant of (and in fact they use) a range of temperatures that are easier for me to offer, and the laws in my area restrict some snakes. But I think reticulated pythons and rattlesnakes are the coolest snakes around, and if I lived somewhere else where the laws were different and my wife was more tolerant, those would be my target animals.

I keep mostly colubrids mainly because they don't require much space (at least my species don't)and because they are fairly easy for me to provide temps for as well. However I am partial to my carpet python.
