Catching Anoles

ontac55 Mar 09, 2009 03:17 PM

Do any of you Florida residents have suggestions how to catch anoles? They are very plentiful around my yard but next to impossible to grab by hand. I have two milks that refuse to eat anything other than live anoles.

no anoles where I live

thoughts?

blowgun with the long needle darts....stick em to the tree

at night?....

one guy would shake the bushes while his kid would grab what fell under it...(they went to DisneyWorld...)LOL.....

fly swatter on a 6 foot pole...LOL

monofilament loop/noose on a 10 foot pole...

mice trap with cricket bait.....(please no)....

.......also hunt in twos...if one guy hides on back of tree the one in front can try and catch it and it will run around to the back ,right in front of the second guy....(I actually assume they would run straight upwards)...

The A way is to just walk around your yard at night while they are sleeping.

When i was a kid I got real good at shooting rubber bands at flys when they land on the wall.I could nail em from 10 feet , ok 8 feet anyway.
Anoles are easier to hit. After you hit them they are stunned so you grab them fast. When I go down south or out west I try to hit the lizard spots before 10am when they are still cold. You can just grab them sometimes if its still 60 degrees.By midday they are way too fast for that.
Set up some bottle caps at about 7 feet and load the rubberband on your thunb and pull back with the other hand.
Dont shoot your eye out lol

After your snake takes a anole or skink toss in a live pinkie thats been scented with the same type lizard(blood and guts soup).
Also you can reverse scent by rubbing pinkie on the lizard to get your snake used to rodent scent.

rubberbands are really a great way...but if you feel you lack enough coordination or accuracy...go out at night with the flashlight and nab them while they are sleeping.

I used to vacation in FL all the time when I was little. I would just catch them by hand when they were on poles or something I could get my hand on the other side of.

What I would do is very slowly approach the pole (or whatever it was on). Usually the anole would go to the opposite side so I couldn't see it. They wouldn't run away, though, unless I approached too fast. When I was close enough, I would position one hand (cupped) over the front of the pole, while I used the other hand (slowly) to scare it to the front from the back. Then I'd grab it with the hand waiting in front.

I got really good at this, but it does take a lot of patience.

Good luck!

found out about this trap by accident
when i was young i went fishing with crickets
we had some leftover when we got home
we kept the crickets in one of those cricket containers
that has the mesh sides and a big hole in the top
with the plastic tube in the hole
well i left the crickets in the container on my porch
the next mourning i had two anoles and a gecko in the container
the couldnt get out, needless to say i had alot less crickets to feed my beardies but a did have fish food for my largemouth bass

hope the helps

try spraying them with a garden hose.

Lay out a tarp or something in a random manner but not too crumpled. You want to create some "caves" or voides for them to hide in/under. Get up early when it is still cool and peel the tarp back and start grabbing them. This only works while you still have cool mornings.

Once you start having really warm mornings AND warm nights then you just have to prectice and get good at it. I know it sounds crazy but don't make eye contactwith them. Walk slowly and smoothly and use your periphial (sp?) vision and just grab them. Sounds easy right?

If that doesn't work, tell a neighborhood kid you will give them .50 each for them. I told my 10 and 4 year old that and within 1 hours I owed $10.00, lol.

luck you,
dc

Thanks for all the great suggestions. I'm trying the cricket trap but no luck so far. I'll try the tarp and flash light method later today.

Being in South Louisiana we catch the Green Anoles at night by the hundreds.Works the same way with the Brown Anoles.
If you've never done it,it would be best to wait later in the night after the dew has fallen.
The moisture collects on the skin making them shine, making them easier to see.
Good luck,ROB
