My celaenops have bred for me for the last two years, I've
only had them for three, and she double clutched for me last year. The neos have started out on live pinks, no problem,
with the exception of a couple of stuborn little ones. I'll
save the mouse tails, and pinky parts for the gentilis, and elapsoides. Has anybody tried using African Pygmy Mice pinkies
on their smaller triangulum?

Howdy Phil, are you getting tangerine colored hatchlings from that pair of celaenops?
That might be a cool project to define....any pics of holdback animals?

I've been curious about trying other species of mice on my milks, too. Jeff Yohe has mentioned using Peromyscus on other taxa with success. I'd love to be able to get my hands on even some f/t White-footed Mouse pinks (P. leucopus) or any non-domesticated mouse. I've heard good things about the Russian/Chinese/Siberian/Mongolian Dwarf Hamsters, too. I just can't bring myself to raise rodents. Ugh...

......Peromyscus leucopus do work

one guy got colonies from me, he worked with mandarin rats..worked...Kathy Love got colonies from me...they must work for something...she even shipped dirty bedding to other people....a friend here had dirty bedding and one snake HAD to have his pinks rolled in the bedding or he wouldn't eat it...the bedding was mooonths old....couldn't smell like Pero's anymore.....I forget if it was goini or mole king?...switched now.....Mr Hardwick sent me a red last year that wasn't eating really....it ate Peros the first try...we'll see how it goes this week...Mr Hardwick is sending me a pair of St Francois reds that like skink juices he says....after regular live pinks and the cup and brain deal...IF I have to I will just use live Pero pinks....IF......we'll see how it goes Jeffrey.........

.....(Mr Hardwick wants my whole room to be red.....really...he talked me into (ha) a pair of Mark Twain reds...I already needed another Johnson CO , I already have a pair of Lake Perry reds....so what's he do...."do you want a pair of St Francois reds?"...LOL......have to say...yea why not....so that's 4 different reds now......(how many more are there......whyyy???>>>LOL...)

.......good thing I like reds.......

Going on a trip soon, and wanted to wait until I get back
to have them shipped. I think Jeff actually sold off his Lincoln Co., Ks. gentilis project. I have a pair of his '05s. I'll post
pics of the Stuarti when I get them.

pigmy mice have fewer babies than we like...and we can sell them for more than they are worth as feeders...I don't have them now...used to....like 2 or 3 babies at a time...and if you bother them they don't do well usually....

peromyscus, russian and chinese and roborovski hamsters...even syrian hamsters....

you can use the pinks...or you can use the blood or urine from them....just hold one up and rub a pink on cetain body parts that may be dripping...especially if you squeeze them a little.....dirty bedding....dirty rodent cage....they have spots that are filthy....just rub pinks into those spots...

if I have alot of pain in butt snakes(corns usually) that won't eat and I really feel like helping them (why?) I just take a hopper/small peromyscus and kill it...cut the head open and you can rub/roll like 20 pinks into the blood brain mixture...if you need more you can cut the belly open and start with mashed liver?...roll pinks into any fluids ,it works alot....

....other ways of not killing all your peromyscus are to have them in a 1.4 colony...10 gallon tank....you just took away 2 fuzzy and the 4 pinks...whatever...now you have no baby peromyscus...just throw in 6 baby regular mice...they will take them and take care of them...after feeding on Pero milk for a day...they smell like peromyscus...you can take them and repeat ....they'll keep changing regular mice into pero smelling babies....

works with hamsters too but not always....

Patton Mar 09, 2009 07:33 PM

Yeah, I have an '06 male that is almost spotted.
I'll try and get some quick pics in a minute for you.

Time for a new cow huh? Milk all dried up?

Patton Mar 10, 2009 06:14 PM

Here you go Charles. This is a holdback male from '06.
The pair produced for me in '06, double clutched in '07
and took '08 off, so I'm very excited about this season.
Jeff, to answer your question, all of her offspring have
been very red at birth, but my male holdback has faided
with age. I suspect that the yellow color of the Dam will
develope with time in some of her offspring. Definitely
an interesting project.... They have also produced a few
(spotted?) similar to my holdback. I can't wait to breed the holdback, to his mother. Only time will tell.

I saw this pair at Chris' place but they look nothing like that hold back male of yours. He isn't big enough to try this year? Maybe a second clutch?

Patton Mar 10, 2009 08:18 PM

Unfortionately, he was a slow starter. I think he may
be a bit small for this season. I'll keep you posted
if they produce any similar this season. What's the deal
with most holdbacks being slow starters? I've had several
holdbacks, especially with Milks and Zonata, that end up
being the ones that need a little T.L.C. to get started eating?
Anybody else notice this? Oye vey!!!! LOL!!!

Ya see holdback's are like woman. The hot ones make you work for them if you want to keep them around, while the not good looking ones you couldn't give away!

" What's the deal
with most holdbacks being slow starters?"

I often wonder if I should holdback the best looking or the best eating or somewhere in between. The answer is keep them all.lol
One thing I find helpfull is to trade or give the other good ones from a clutch to your friends. This way you have back ups that you have solid history on.If they live close enough you can lend/borrow them for breeding.

daneby Mar 10, 2009 11:09 PM

LOL, Yea I know guys, they are awesome looking, I felt like I was making a big mistake as I was boxing them up to ship them. I sold a bunch of stuff last year that I really miss, but I had to make some room, now that we have a new baby I only get one snake room, that takes some getting use to after having two for so long

See you in a couple months, Dell! Any plans yet?

Dan
