I like to breed the younger males to only one to two females at the most, some breeders will breed one male to four or five females.I have much better fertilty when breeding one male to fewer females.

If you have the best interest of the animals at hand you would only breed him to a couple females. I couldn't see why anyone would want to do more than that unless it was all about the money to them.

obviously you've never been caged with strange females ... I'd want some variety LOL.

Actually though I haven't paired a male with more than 2 females, just because I don't want to chance infertility and so far aren't that skilled at knowing when a particular hognose is ovulating. But as for safety of the animals, I don't know that it matters if a male is trying to breed the same female all summer long or if he's getting at a few, as long as there's rest in between. Right?

I'm guessing it will depend on the precision of the breeder's methods. Mine so far are basically, close the lid and let them do their thing

Too funny!! I did pool service for 7 years in suny south Fl and I can tell you two theories that are wrong.

1 dogs don't hate the mailman

2 the milkman didn't get the ole lady pregnant

On a serious note, I've seen young males that are over bred and heard of numerous ones that didn't do well after their first season. I have heard of one that never bred again and a couple that perished. It's even more prevelant in ball pythons. Money hungry breeders that are trying to get rich quick and young males not reacting well.

If he got plenty of rest in between I could see that helping him along but why take the chance.

Thanks Charles, sounds like you have some good advice. Any other breeders of W hogs have any new input. Charles brought to light issues of breeding to young or multples which may have caused health issues. Would/could this cause gentic issues down the line?

I breed my males and females at two years old.I am not a fan of the gram weight breeding.I will breed a male to 3-4 females only.

Charles great point.
