Favorite Naja

Curious Mar 09, 2009 09:28 PM

I have always been fascinated by the elapidae family - Naja, Dendroaspis, Oxyuranus...

I'm just focusing on Naja genus in this post and was wondering what would be your favorite Naja (not necessary that you have it in your collection) and why? Ofcourse, if you have a picture of your snake that would be awesome.

Mine: Naja Nivea. Why? Color, unpredictable temperment and highly potent venom.

So far I have kept:

Monocled Cobras (Naja kaouthia)
Suphan Cobra (N. k. suphanensis)
Red Spitting Cobras (Naja pallida)

From the ones I've kept, I think I like the Red Spitters best for their docile temperament, they get used to their keeper rather quickly and for their beautiful color, of course.

However in general, I would say Samar Cobras (Naja samarensis) are the best. Their color is so striking that it blows my mind away. I've also heard that they are evil! The moment I move back to Europe, I will buy a trio. Getting them here costs way too much. (Last time I checked it was 5000$ per pair)

I am attaching some pictures. Except for the Samars, the pictures are of my snakes that I had or still have.

I have always thought that Cobras are the most beautiful and majestic animals in the world due to their posture, beauty and venom but I recently fell in love with Death Adders so now my heart is torn apart .

Black snakes are the most beautiful to me. So I love Drymarchon, Naja naja (black pak phase, which in over 35 years is the only bite I've had...and it was dry), even black phase colubrid racers (Masticophis,Elaphe,Coluber, etc.) But my fav is Naja melanoluecus. Awesome snake with personality, size, & unpredictable attitude. Just my pref!

When you say black Naja, I think of Naja haje legiones. Stunning animals!

I love the Spectacle cobra, or Indian. To me, the real icon of them all. Even more than a King.
Couple of pictures of mine.

I agree, the Spectacled is definately my favorite. Its just what I think of when I think cobra.

If I had to name a favorite cobra I think it would have to be Psuedohaje goldii but I have not been fortunate enough to acquire any. I am also really fond of Naja melanoleuca, Naja annulifera and Naja annulata which I do have pairs of. Here are a few pictures of some of my snakes. -Jamie

Naja melanoleuca; female. My pair are the East/South African color. I want to get some of the black ones when I can find some.

Naja annulifera; male.

Naja annulata; male.

First off, gorgeous animals. Obviously very well cared for.

I noticed you labelled the water cobra as Naja annulata. Has their taxonomy been changed from Boulengerina annulata?

Thanks! Hopefully I'm successful in breeding my Forest cobras this year. As far as the water cobras,Yes, they have been synonymized with Naja, along with Paranaja. The reference is from Wolfgang Wuster's website and corresponding paper. Here's a link to the reference. -Jamie

Thanks for the link. I was unaware of the change.

Good luck with your projects!

My favorites are the "BANDED" Black and White Spitters that I saw at Dean Ripa's place. His Bushmasters are even better. Bright orange and black!
