More UV is good!

hayseed Mar 11, 2009 08:25 AM

Last week I spent some money for another good UV bulb (mercury vapor type). I thought maybe my critters could use a little more since they are in a fairly large enclosure. So now I have a basking light, a long fluorescent tube along the back, and two good uv bulbs. After adding the extra uv for a week, I am amazed at how invigorated the collared babies are! They are more active than usual. They are running around hunting crickets like mad, and they seem to like basking right under all the bright uv. Even my skinny boy Kermit is looking like he's finally putting on some weight.

Just thought I'd share that since it seems to have been such a positive step. More UV seems to be doing them well!

Happy spring time!

It may be just that they LOVE more light, brighter, do not over due on the UVB it can be harmful.

There's a good article on lights and UVB in the latest issue of Reptiles Magazine

I always wanted to try a mercury vapor but I figured they give off too much heat for my tanks. Good to hear that the lizards are enjoying it!

i use MVB on my 40 gallon breeder, and that is my main heat and UVB source. the only other light i use is standard 75 watt for more light. my smaller tank i use a standard heat bulb and a UVB strip with another bulg for more light.
