Anyone ever hear of Pet-Tinic?

veronicag Sep 11, 2003 03:04 PM

Ok, I just received an e-mail from someone that had a few questions about their beardie. They told me that their vet didn't recommend the B-complex vitamins that I recommend because they don't contain any iron or copper. Ummm, hello, that's what the multi vitamin supplement is for. hehe Sorry had to get that out. I hate ignorant vets. Anyways, so he tells this lady to give the beardie a product for cats and dogs called Pet-Tinic. Info at this site:

http://www.pfizer.com/ah/vet/tref/merch/3691073.html

I couldn't believe my eyes when I found out that it contains a huge amount of beef liver, which has a calcium phos ratio of 1:83!!! And on top of that, her beardies blood work came back with very high phosphorus levels. What is this vet trying to do? Get more business? Sorry, just aggitated. :-D

Then, the vet tells her not to give the beardie acidophilus! The beardie just finished a round of Albon for a coccidia treatment and the beardie doesn't have an appetite and isn't eating. So I recommended acidophilus. The vet disagrees again. He says to give the beardie Lactinex. Ok, so I looked that up on the net too and that's just a fancy-smancy name for Lactobacillus Acidophilus. Are we dealing with one smart vet here or what?!

Hehe.
Thanks for letting me vent. Comments are more than welcome.

I'm anxiously waiting to see if anyone would recommend or not recommend the product Pet Tinic for beardies. A website where you can see all the info on it is at the link below. I just can't see a vet recommending this for a reptile. Each dropperful contains 33 mg of beef liver. And beef liver has a calcium to phos. ratio of 1:83.

Ok,

I checked it out just now and personally I wouldn't go near the stuff for my beardies!
That stuff is geared more towards puppies and such and it even says that! A reptile is a looooooong way from being a puppy or a kitten lol

Thats my opinion

is this a reptile vet?? it seems like he doesnt know much about beardies
if the beardie already has excessive phosphorous levels, calcium deficiency is a major problem with beardies, and the product has a horrible ratio, then i dont see why anyone in their right mind would use it. whats supposed to be so great about this product that you cant get the benefits from another source without the extra phosphorous?

[ sarcasm mode on ] Remember, vets have college degrees in animal medicine, and know MUCH more about what they need than the people that don't have a veterinary degree but spend years with only one or two types of reptile. And they can't possibly be wrong, even though there are several thousand species of reptiles, and they all have different needs and requirements... [ sarcasm mode off ]

Sorry... Couldn't help myself.

And yes, I know, I should try harder...

Anyway... You already know what should be done here. Hell, anybody that's read any of the numerous books that are out there, or been to any of the web sites on B.D. care should know.

I would say your advise was dead on right. So what if it doesn't contain copper the multi vitamin has plenty of that. Think this is a case of a know it all vet giving someone the ringer in the pocketbook. Maybe the doc has stock in Pfizer?? No other reason why that would be given to a Dragon with an already high phosphorus level. And the acidaphillus thing well thats just him sounding smarter using a big name for the same ingredients to an unowing customer. Gees, he might lose business if someone was giving the same advise over the internet..
