Rolling BP Eggs

Bolitochrome Mar 12, 2009 12:05 PM

I recently watched one of the many YouTube videos about someone moving and incubating a clutch of Ball Python eggs. In it, they rolled the entire clutch up on end to get it unstuck from the substrate.
I was wondering how safe this is for a clutch of Ball Python eggs because many other reptiles have eggs that are sensitive to rolling. More than a 30 degree roll from the position it was laid in greatly increases the chances of detaching the veins from the side of the egg and killing the snake inside.

Does anyone have some information on this?

It all depends on when the eggs were laid and how long they've been setting. I don't know how long the benchmark is but if you could get to them within 3-5 hours after being laid I would think the risk of some slight movement one way or another isn't that big of a deal, but like I said I'm not sure how long you have....just know that shortly after laying you can get away with alot more movement than after they've been setting for a few days. I'm sure someone may have more specifics on this...

Ive heard of People not wanting to even slightly turn a Egg , to get it loose. Ive handled allot of Eggs though out the Years and have found that, within 18 hours of the Eggs being laid You could be fairly ruff with them.

Ive also found that Roll outs and eggs that have been Incubated for Weeks can do a Complete roll and still hatch out just fine. It seems every Year I have an Egg roll on me and I think the Worse will happen. I haven't had a Egg not hatch in Years, mainly Burm eggs. Those seem to be alittle more touchie.. This is JMO and what Ive seen in the Past. I hope it helps You out.
