I bought a baby argentine black and white tegu at the hamburg show on february 28. Just yesterday I noticed him stop using his front legs every once in awhile. First thing I thought of was impaction but its only periodically and when i pick him up he uses them again? I am soaking him incase and if it gets worse may try some olive oil. Do you agree impaction? I had a beardie act like this (well alot worse) and it was and I soaked and gave oil and it passed. He is kept onsphagnum moss. I know people are against it with babies but I believe in allowing them to dig. Any suggestions? I know this is the monitor forum but tegu one is a little slow.

I see no one has said anything. I have never kept a Tegu. Does it eat? Maybe it is just weak and tired. You could give it some drops of fruit juice to lick perhaps and then let it rest?

Could be early signs of that calcium deficiency disease? Just throwin that out there, I know it happens with the back legs that way.

Its hard to say cause I just got him. It comes and goes but his back toes seem to have a twitch lol i guess you would call it. He eats good so far but it just started.

The twitching (so I have read) sounds like a sysptom of MBD. However, if you said he is starting to be a good eater maybe you got him just in time. I'm sure if you are providing good husbandry and a good diet the MBD will be revearsed (if thats even what it is). I hope it all works out for you. Thanks.

Get some liquid calcium from a pharmacy, and hope that the twitching hasnt been going on for a while before you got the lizard, it may be the reason it was for sale.
Ive seen some rescue and for sale that twitched, and they got worse, then died. A young fast growing tegu uses alot of calcium, so it robs its own skeleton for the needed calcium if it doesnt get enough.
I attribuite this to the typical diet fed most tegus of fruit, veggies, catfood, etc and very very few whole animals.

He seems to be doing better. been makeing sure lots of calcium and gave him some oil incase it was impaction and seems to be better. I know he didnt have it before hand at least not noticable becuase i made sure to examine him when i was making sure he was an argentine and not columbian but things seem better for now. thanx
