How long should it take snake to get food down and cleaning question.

EricJ Sep 11, 2003 03:24 PM

My corn is an excellent eater. She has been eating 3 pinkies every 6 days. The people at the pet store said she could probably go on to fuzzies now. They showed me a cornsnake they had and asked if mine was about the same size. My snake is about the the very same size if not SLIGHTLY bigger. She said if it was that big then i should move on to fuzzies. Well i tried one yesterday and my snake ate it but it seemed to take forever. Like 20 minutes to get it down. She hasn't regurged it up. I know it is supposed to be no more then 1 and a half the width of the widest part of the snake but its hard to judge. And i've read that snakes can hurt their jaws on food that is too large.

Next, I recently got a 29 gallon cage for $10. Mine is 20L and I figure bigger is better. Why not give her more room to crawl around. I need to clean the cage though. I got some bleach but I don't remember how much to dilute it though or is there something better to clean with?

Thanks in advance.

A pic or a size description would help to determine the proper food size. 20 minutes is not to long though. Snakes can sometimes take up to an hour to get. The 1 1/2 times rule is good, but I usually don't feed any bigger that the same size as the snake. When a snake starts eating 2 at a time it is usually time to move up a size or feed less more often. As for cleaning Bleach diluted 1:8 is sufficent, but I use windex. and then just wipe it down with water afterward.
